Hotel de Ville, Paris

(1,100+ reviews on the web)
Government Building Historic Site
Hotel de Ville houses Paris's city government, and is one of the loveliest buildings in town. For a good view from outside, go to the top floor of the Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville (BHV) department store opposite, and walk up a flight of stairs to the roof terrace. The present structure replaced the 16th-century original, which burned down in 1871. An enlarged pastiche of its predecessor, the new building was built by the architects Ballu and Deperthes and was mostly completed by 1882. The building is lavishly decorated both inside and out, and finished in an arresting white stone, similar to that used for the Sacre-Coeur basilica. When Paris was liberated from the Germans in 1944, General de Gaulle greeted the crowds from a front window of the building. Robespierre was shot in the jaw and arrested in the original building in 1794. • I was lucky to experience the night concert which went for the whole weekend. It was an electronica band who sang in English. Such a contrast to the Renaissance Revival architecture in the background....  more »

  • This place is a great place to stay. Clean, cute rooms by the bay. Walking distance to USS Lexington, close to Aquarium too. The hotel can get discount tickets to both so get them there before you go. Not much in the way of good food nearby, so plan to bring food or drive to get it. The rooms offer micro & fridge so bringing food works.
  • An opulent city like Paris needs a city hall to match. This building is stunning in all of its detail. There is a tourist office located inside which was very helpful and there is also free wifi.
  • Unfortunately because of lack of time I couldn't visit the inside but this is definitely a must go attraction in Paris. In the square at the front of the building you can usually see of street performers that gather a lot of attention. Although they may be honest people, a lot of pickpockets take advantage of the distraction to grab you belongings so be careful.
  • Impressive Architecture and Arts, beautiful sculptures all around! Thank you artists and nameless artisans!
  • One of the most gorgeous exteriors in Paris. Stunning from every angle. Loved walking past it every day. For an awesome view of the roof and upper levels, check out the view from the upper floors of the BHV Marais.
