Gare du Nord, Paris

1.5
#248 of 2,044 in Things to do in Paris
One of the six large terminus railway stations of the mainline network for Paris, Gare du Nord is well known for its architectural beauty. A sculptural display represents the principal cities served by the station. Eight of the nine majestic statues crowning the building along the cornice line illustrate destinations outside France, with the ninth figure of Paris in the center. The station has served as a setting in numerous films, such as "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Ocean’s Twelve," and is mentioned in books such as "The Da Vinci Code" and "The Historian." Through this station, you can connect with several urban transportation lines, including Paris Métro, RER, and buses. With around 190 million travelers per year, this is the busiest railway station in Europe. It is the busiest railway station in Europe and it shows. The French have kept the old exterior and then the station from the outside is beautiful, inside much chaos reigns and circuitous, if you don't know it, take 15 minutes to get your bearings and coincidence.

They are slowly improving the station. New routes in and out of Metro in the newer annexe replacing the old dank subways. More light, space and signage. Best of all, at the top of the stairs/escalator...  more »

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
