Church of the Val-de-Grâce, Paris

4.6
The Church of the Val-de-Grâce is a Roman Catholic church in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, in what is now the Val-de-Grâce Hospital. The edifice was formerly a royal abbey, and its dome is a principal landmark of the skyline of Paris. The church was initially designed by François Mansart, succeeded by Jacques Lemercier, who designed the Saint-Sacrament chapel's spiral-coffered dome after Philibert de L'Orme's chapel at the Château d'Anet.HistoryThe church was founded by Anne of Austria, Queen Consort of Louis XIII, in 1621. Anne, a devout Roman Catholic and counter-reformationist, had visited a priory in the deep valley of the Bièvre river and had become a friend of the prioress, Marguerite de Veny d'Arbouse. Anne suggested that an abbey be established with a suitable church. Construction began in 1634 on land given by the crown, the former Hôtel du Petit-Bourbon. Construction proceeded slowly, particularly after Anne fell from favor with the King. The estranged Anne spent time at the abbey, watched by Cardinal Richelieu and participating in intrigues with others who were out of favor. Louis finally forbade Anne to visit the abbey, but soon after, Anne became pregnant with Louis' heir, the Dauphin Louis Dieudonné.

  • Passing through the Valley of Grace for work, I had the opportunity to visit the Church "Holy chapel" which we have told the romantic story. What a wonder. I went back to the pleasure of the eyes and emotion. Photos taken at a telephoto lens revealed the beauty of the details. If you have time, be sure to go through the armed forces medical Museum. He attached. Ask to visit the gallery where works students as well as the library. Everything is beautiful. Do it alone, with family, with friends, with colleagues

  • Interesting building for its history, the old "Cité Sainte" located on "Petit Bourbon" on the way to the old road to Saint Jacques de Compostelle. The chapel is inspired by St Peter in Roma. Some great paintings by De Champaigne are there too.
  • Beautiful church, but it doesn't feel like one. Too many tourists.
  • the church is a normal church. Nothing to fancy or extraordinary to see. You can only get in with a museum ticket (€5) and the museum is so out of date that you will enjoy better going to the museum Invalides by just adding €3 Euros more. Avoid this museum.
  • 👍
  • Beautiful baroque building (the only one in Paris) of Italian and Spanish inspiration. The canopy, the vault in the nave subwoofers and pavement are the domestic centerpieces, the dome and the same for the outside façade.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
