Church of Saint-Germain-des-Pres, Paris

4.4
Church of Saint-Germain-des-Pres is all that remains of a sixth-century abbey of the same name, destroyed during the French Revolution. With royal patronage, it soon became one of the wealthiest abbeys in France, as well as a center for scholars. King Childebert I commissioned the abbey and church to house. The abbey got its named from Childebert's close advisor and the Bishop of Paris, Germain--who was later canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. Among its claims to fame are the facts that Louis-César de Bourbon, son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, was an abbot here and that philosopher René Descartes was buried here. • There is a 4 year renovation ongoing in the church, and currently the nave is hidden by scaffolding. However, one can already admire the recently renovated choir, and it is quite spectacular. One does...  more »
  • The Church Saint-Germain-des-close is one of the oldest church in Paris. It remains a major Romanesque part well restored in the 19th century (the capitals of the Romanesque period are at the Cluny museum). Currently, there is scaffolding inside. To watch the bedside from the outside where you notice the typical Romanesque buttresses, which is unique in island of France.

  • Beautiful church. Rehabilitation of the murals... Willy-nilly, helped by the city of Paris. Funds I think, mainly from sponsorship. • Worth visiting. Especially if you polish, to see some heritage (Jan Kazimierz II & pope). Walk in and to left to see how massive the abbey was few centuries ago.
  • Gradually being beautifully restored., so it is becoming more beautiful each time we visit. Also don't miss the small garden to the left of the front door (away from Blvd St-Germain). Very serene.
  • Saint-Germain-des-Prés church, is a former Benedictine abbey of Paris, located in the current 6th district, founded in the middle of the sixth century by the Merovingian kingChildebert I and the bishop of Paris, Saint Germain, under the name of St. Vincent and St. Croix.
  • So unbeliveably beautiful. Cant wait to return when its fully restored inside. Amazing canopy and decorations.
  • A very beautiful, quiet and serene place to pray or attend Mass. I was there for Christmas Day Mass in 1990 after having made the mistake of going to Notre Dame for Midnight Mass with all of the TV lights and cameras and too many people shoving and pushing. Went several times during my stay in a nearby hotel and met a very nice priest who heard my confession. My spiritual home in Paris.
