  • I went to satisfy my curiosity because a friend told me about. This museum is beautiful and it is municipal. You really take the time to go visit it.

  • This museum is all about the history of Paris, and it's fantastic. It was easily one of my favourites in the city with great information about the Paris Commune and the French Revolution. Unfortunatel...  more »
  • I've been here countless times and enjoyed myself each time. Excellent era-by-era explanation of Paris' history with great artifacts. Love the captured interiors of important buildings. And the museum...  more »

  • As a fan of Alphonse Mucha's work, my favorite part of the museum was the Boutique Fouquet within the Musée Carnavalet: a complete reconstruction of the boutique, an installation of a space, the interior designed by Mucha. Mucha conceived the shop as a complete work of art, which would provide a harmonious environment for Fouquet's jewellery. Mucha drew inspiration from the natural world, and pride of place is given to two spectacular peacocks set against glowing designs in stained glass. It is one of the most spectacular examples of Art Nouveau decorative design.
  • A surprise at the heart of Paris, free and excellent exhibition of art telling the history of Paris and Parisians. I went there twice - autumn and summer, in the Summer it was disappointing, almost everything closed. Check if the museum is functioning normal.
  • Wonderful museum. Beats many museums which are not free. I went for their Napoleon exhibition in 2015 and I've been going back ever since. Nice collection of beetle epoque paintings and some really interesting information on the architecture and urban landscape of fin d'siecle Paris. Go for an hour when you are wandering around the marais, go for half an hour before you leave, who cares, it's free!
  • Nice little museum with a small but diverse collection. Beautiful building and courtyard. Well worth a 20-30 minute look especially since it is free.
  • Nice museum. Not that big.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
