Bassin de la Villette, Paris

4.4
#6 of 8 in Nature in Paris
A man-made lake surrounded by shops and historical buildings, Bassin de la Villette serves as an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll. Sunshine, fresh air, and the buzz of pedestrians infuse the shores with energy. Colorful parasols and long stretches of green lawns line either side, tucked below old tree canopies. Inaugurated by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808, the lake quickly became the setting for many social events. Today, it functions as a hub of art, culture, and science, with cinemas, museums, restaurants, and pubs all within close proximity. The lake itself provides many water-based recreational activities, so consider renting a sailboat or kayak and getting out on the water. • Friends of mine live on both sides of this place, near where the Bassin opens out, which has become a focal point for thousands during the summer months. Towards the Stalingrad end, they create part o...  more »
  • A channel full of activities for all ages. There is an area with sand and hammocks on the beach with service library, playground for the most you kids, space dance (when we went they were with boogie woogie and had an incredible atmosphere!), giant Foosball, bars, sprinklers, water play area, zip... A beautiful place to spend the day! Ideal to go with the most kids.

  • The capacity is obviously limited, but this pool has the merit of finally existing! The place is pretty cool and allows good to make a small jump to the water when you want, without spending money and without great ceremony. You just not to stop there, Paris? :-)

  • A nice place to walk or just sit on a bench and people watch. There are a number of little restaurants around and the cinemas, sometimes you see people fishing and if the rumors are true there may soon be a swimming area.
  • Fresh
  • So nice
  • Inspiring
  • Just super asked, great calm for a great day with family or friends, pic - nic in the open air in a huge park, activities and food available although we bring food to eat but it's always nice to know, and I will return with joy this weekend

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
