Bassin de la Villette, Paris

4.8
#5 of 7 in Nature in Paris
Water Body Nature / Park
A man-made lake surrounded by shops and historical buildings, Bassin de la Villette serves as an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll. Sunshine, fresh air, and the buzz of pedestrians infuse the shores with energy. Colorful parasols and long stretches of green lawns line either side, tucked below old tree canopies. Inaugurated by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808, the lake quickly became the setting for many social events. Today, it functions as a hub of art, culture, and science, with cinemas, museums, restaurants, and pubs all within close proximity. The lake itself provides many water-based recreational activities, so consider renting a sailboat or kayak and getting out on the water. • The capacity is obviously limited, but this pool has the merit of finally existing! The place is pretty cool and allows good to make a small jump to the water when you want, without spending money and without great ceremony. You just not to stop there, Paris? :-)

  • The pool opened on 17 July 2017 was eagerly awaited by all Parisians. The pool has three pools, one of 40 cm, the other of 1.20 m and the other 2 m. water is not heated, but bathing temperature is acceptable in the days where it's warm. Access is completely free. The showers have only cold water. Plan 1 euro to store your belongings in lockers. The first day we have to wait 45 minutes in the queue before you can access the basin, but we regretted not having waited! The pool is just great, go at least once! I will probably return.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
