Basilique Sainte Clotilde, Paris

4.4
The Basilica of Saint Clotilde is a basilica church in Paris, located on the Rue Las Cases, in the area of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It is best known for its imposing twin spires.
Construction of the church was first mooted by the Paris City Council on 16 February 1827. It was designed by architect F. C. Gau of Cologne in a neo-Gothic style. Work began in 1846, but Gau died in 1853, and the job was continued by Théodore Ballu who completed the church in 1857. It was opened on 30 November 1857 by Cardinal Morlot. The church was declared a minor basilica by Pope Leo XIII in 1896.
This neo-gothic basilica is marked by its two towers 69 meters high.
The interior is clear and there are stained glass windows by Thibaut (a 19th century glassmaker), paintings by Jules Eugène Lenepveu, sculptures by James Pradier and Francisque Joseph Duret. A series of sculptures by Jean-Baptiste Claude Eugène Guillaume representing the conversion of Valerie of Limoges, her condemnation to death, decapitation and the appearance of Saint Martial.

  • I love going into basiliques to appreciate the architecture and beauty of the buildings. This one had a surprising feature that I have never seen. There were rows of small children-sized chairs...  more »
  • We were on our way towards downtown and just happened to walk down this street. The church was open so we went in, charming and simply beautiful. Worth a look.  more »
  • If you have any interest in medieval churches and find their interior and architecture to contain a special beauty, you want to stop here...especially during mass. While Notre Dame is tough to beat.....  more »

  • This beautiful church was sadly closed when we visited so we didn't get to see it from inside. There are few benches in the courtyard to enjoy a coffee overlooking the church.
  • Charming sun light through stained glass windows in the late afternoons, quiet and hiden , we were alone almost all time visiting! You can see and understand the logic of gothic arhitecture in such a moment in the right place, the light is sacro and how could feel medieval chridtians the holly spirit in the church in the same way!
  • Stumbled across this church by accident late at night - the doors were open, and inside musicians and choir were performing. Very talented people, welcoming old church (though I'm not at all religious).
  • A beautiful gothic church hidden between Parisian houses in the 7th arrondissement. I recommend it for somewhat offbeat visits of Paris. The area is very calm and safe also the church is lighted beautifully in the evening.
  • One of the lightest churches of Paris... Adds to the ambience... Great organ too worth visiting
