Roman Theatre of Orange, Orange

#1 of 17 in Things to do in Orange
Roman Theatre of Orange was built early in the first century CE, and today hosts the Chorégies d'Orange, a summer opera festival. This is one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the Julian colony of Arausio, which was established by the soldiers of the second legion. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is famous for varied dramatic forms, such as mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and attelana, a kind of farce similar to the commedia dell' arte. Roman audiences, who were allowed to attend free of charge, were fascinated by the spectacular and elaborate sets. The theater was originally used as a distraction for the colonies, to discourage them from political action. • If you do not get to the performance, there is really only way to evaluate the acoustics of the Ancient theater -to come first to the opening. You will have 5-7 minutes to yell at the completely empty...  more »
  • Beautiful theater, impressive by its size and its acoustics. It is really interesting to visit because it is very imposing but it is still more grandiose to attend a concert, because the sound is unique: however think take you a cushion, the stone is hard ;)

  • It is already very specifically on same audience levels to sit on those already before 2'000 years up to 10'000 people visited the partially full-day performances.

  • A must see site in Orange. The included audio guide brings the place to life. This is a significant Roman ruin that is in relatively good condition and compares well with anything you can see in Italy. For those interested in a bit of a hike, outside the site there is a free path you can take to the top of the hill behind the site for free views of the site and the city.
  • Truly unique, interesting, well preserved and well managed. The theatre is also still used for stage productions. We were even allowed to take our dog in with us just not into the museum itself.
  • This Roman theatre is really worth visiting. A very impressive structure and surprisingly well preserved (given its age). Tickets also provided you with an audio guide and access to the small museum opposite. There is a nice restaurant just next to the theatre (just around from the ticket office).
  • Orange may not be a big city, but it sure has a great Roman theatre. Worth every cent to visit and imagine (or relive) the great days of the Roman empire here.
  • Great theater. More than 100 meters wide, 37 meters tall. Excellent building, very old. The romans could make spectacles for 40 thousands of spectators here. Don't forget to visit if you are here in Orange.
