Roman Theatre of Orange, Orange

4.5
Must see · World heritage site · Ruin · Historic Site
Roman Theatre of Orange was built early in the first century CE, and today hosts the Chorégies d'Orange, a summer opera festival. This is one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the Julian colony of Arausio, which was established by the soldiers of the second legion. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is famous for varied dramatic forms, such as mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and attelana, a kind of farce similar to the commedia dell' arte. Roman audiences, who were allowed to attend free of charge, were fascinated by the spectacular and elaborate sets. The theater was originally used as a distraction for the colonies, to discourage them from political action. • Beautiful theathre, wonderful acoustic. It gave a special feeling to listen to a concert here. Very very impressive. I loved it.
  • Beautiful architecture and exquisitely well-preserved Roman features make this place unique in the world, as it is the only Roman amphitheatre that still has its stage wall intact. They are constantly renovating the wall, but it is still worth visiting if you are in the area!
  • Incredibly preserved historical site! This is a must visit for every lover of history and archeology. The shop beside the theater also contains many resources about the place. 2,000 years after its construction, this is still a fantastic location for plays! I recited a scene from Shakespeare just for fun, and the natural acoustics carried my voice to the “top bleachers” where a friend said he heard me perfectly. Simply amazing!
  • History at its best over 2 thousand years old built by the Romans fascinating
  • Astounding, built 135 AD and still there, lots of Roman sites in the area,a must visit place..
