Ruin Landmark
Roman Theatre of Orange was built early in the first century CE, and today hosts the Chorégies d'Orange, a summer opera festival. This is one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the Julian colony of Arausio, which was established by the soldiers of the second legion. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is famous for varied dramatic forms, such as mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and attelana, a kind of farce similar to the commedia dell' arte. Roman audiences, who were allowed to attend free of charge, were fascinated by the spectacular and elaborate sets. The theater was originally used as a distraction for the colonies, to discourage them from political action. • A beautiful place, a starry summer night... A great concert! But the stairs are steep to reach the upper bleachers

  • This ancient theatre of orange is very well preserved when you know the history of its construction to the present day. A great sound that makes you want to see another monument as a Opera among the greatest classics. Beware there are markets, markets, markets. .. is not for people with difficulties to walk.

  • Very interesting location that is still being used today. Free audioguide that is very interesting. There is also a movie about the history of the theater and short clips of shows that have taken place there. I got the combined Nimes+Orange "Roman Pass". Great value.
  • Best Roman theater in Europe! The audio tours are surprisingly informative and it has some unique multimedia presentations.
  • Amazingly well preserved roman theatre. Excellent exhibitions and good audio guide
  • Amazing place if you have the occasion to see a concert in this place do not hesitate !! Well conserved. No bar inside.
  • Attended a performance here while on vacation. Found the tickets to be very reasonable as we sat at the very top center. If you are able to manage the very dangerous stairs - it's well worth the effort. DO NOT attempt them if elderly or small children. My son was 10 and was fine until he dozed off during the show and we had to negotiate the previously charming steps going down! The views, the sunset the history all make this location a must see if you're in the area. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance for a bite before a show.
