Roman Theatre of Orange, Orange

#1 of 13 in Things to do in Orange
Roman Theatre of Orange was built early in the first century CE, and today hosts the Chorégies d'Orange, a summer opera festival. This is one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the Julian colony of Arausio, which was established by the soldiers of the second legion. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is famous for varied dramatic forms, such as mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and attelana, a kind of farce similar to the commedia dell' arte. Roman audiences, who were allowed to attend free of charge, were fascinated by the spectacular and elaborate sets. The theater was originally used as a distraction for the colonies, to discourage them from political action. • Magnificent Roman Theatre and very well preserved, probably the best of all. We took the audio tour and it was a success, they explain everything in detail. Really highly recommended visit

  • Who Orange says, think immediately to the Roman Theatre. Beautiful preserved monument. Your ticket also gives you access to the stedelijk museum opposite the theatre.

  • The city of Orange is nice and very well put in value, with the mildness of the climate and friendly cafés in the centre. Its ancient theatre of Augustus, dating from the first century BC is the best preserved, passing in front of Rome and Pula. The tour is done ideally with the audio guide, then we can walk on the surrounding hill that gives an overview of the city. No problem to park either what is significant.

  • This Roman theatre is really worth visiting. A very impressive structure and surprisingly well preserved (given its age). Tickets also provided you with an audio guide and access to the small museum opposite. There is a nice restaurant just next to the theatre (just around from the ticket office).
  • Amazing building. Makes you feel very small! Would love to see the theatre come alive with music
  • Great theater. More than 100 meters wide, 37 meters tall. Excellent building, very old. The romans could make spectacles for 40 thousands of spectators here. Don't forget to visit if you are here in Orange.
  • Orange may not be a big city, but it sure has a great Roman theatre. Worth every cent to visit and imagine (or relive) the great days of the Roman empire here.
  • We were on a walking trip in Orange and stopped here. It is beautiful and if I lived closer I would certainly go to one of the live events. Stone seating areas so you would need to take a cushion! One of our group performed a poem as we walked up the stairs to see what sound was like. Fabulous.
