Roman Theatre of Orange, Orange
(4.7/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Roman Theatre of Orange was built early in the first century CE, and today hosts the Chorégies d'Orange, a summer opera festival. This is one of the best preserved Roman theaters in the Julian colony of Arausio, which was established by the soldiers of the second legion. UNESCO declared this a World Heritage Site in 1980. It is famous for varied dramatic forms, such as mime, pantomime, poetry readings, and attelana, a kind of farce similar to the commedia dell' arte. Roman audiences, who were allowed to attend free of charge, were fascinated by the spectacular and elaborate sets. The theater was originally used as a distraction for the colonies, to discourage them from political action. • The monument is wonderful but practically inserted in an urban environment, which was not particularly nice. The audio guide is free but long-winded. Still a must see.

  • If there are places to visit without fail during a visit in the Vaucluse region, it is the ancient theatre of Orange, superbly preserved and restored, it gives off a charge Gigantism of history that cannot leave indifferent. How not to admire the work with the technical means of the Roman era, carried out by his men who did brave the weather and stay until our days.

  • Beautiful witness of the past very well put in value. I dream to come and see an opera in this magnificent setting.

  • This might be the most exquisite Roman ruin in France. The history and size of it drew me in and the museum across the street holds even more splendor, so don't miss out on that either.
  • Amazing 2,000 year old roman stadium with stage wall. Still used today for concerts. Fascinating to walk around and imagine how it must have been when built.
  • Nice place. At the moment starts long term renovation.
  • Not very impressive to me and way to expensive.
  • Fantastic old well preserved roman time period theatre - well worth the entrance feed to explore.
