Castle Landmark
The Château de Noirmoutier is a castle on the Île de Noirmoutier in the Vendée département of France. It dominates the town of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île with its almost 20m keep. The castle is very well preserved and a fine example of 12th-century medieval architecture.HistoryThe first traces of the castle appeared in 830 with the construction of a castrum by the abbot Hilbold, from the monastery of Saint-Philbert. It served to defend the monks and the island's population from the Vikings. The castle was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century by the feudal power who was trying to stabilise the region, notably by preventing Norman pillaging. The island at that time was under the control of the barons of La Garnache. The keep was built by Pierre IV of La Garnache, then an enclosure equipped with towers was built around the lower courtyard. In the 16th century, the castle was held by the La Trémoille family, then viscounts of Thouars. The castle resisted numerous attacks: the English in 1342 and 1360, and again in 1386 under the command of the Earl of Arundel the Spanish in 1524 and 1588but in 1674, it was taken by the Dutch troops of Admiral Tromp.

  • The castle is good attraction, takes you 30-40 min to walk through. Nicely restored, but don't expect more than it is, a castle. Cultural stop in a sunny island.  more »
  • there is aninteresting small museum of local history. Good views from the tower. Lot of narrow steps  more »
  • A great visit to the Noirnoutiers Castle that was a prisoner of war jail during the first World War !!!! great views on the roof as well - don't miss it !  more »
  • Noirmoutier is so beautiful. Must see!
  • Worth a visit just for the views from the top of the castle.
  • Lovely looking but only saw outside, expensive to pay in
  • A historic landmark in the centre of town which has survived several battles since it was built in the 12th century. It dominates the town of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île with its almost 20 metre high keep. The castle itself is filled with various exhibits and photographs showing aspects related its long history. Meanwhile should you have the stamina to climb the long winding staircase there are great views from the top of the castle. Note that opening times vary depending upon the time of year.
  • It was raining the day of our visit. The first part about the interesting history with photos of the time and the second part on all movies filmed on the island. Too bad for the ban on photos and a little expensive for what it is. Otherwise the view is superb!
