Musée Marc Chagall, Nice

Musée Marc Chagall, founded in 1973, houses some of the best works of Marc Chagall. Chagall himself guided the architecture of the museum. Note the mosaic arching over a pond, and the blue stained glass that adorns the walls of the concert hall. View a famous series of 17 religious paintings, which Chagall offered to the French state in 1966. The museum hosts exhibitions on world religion, as per Chagall's wishes. • Admission is €10 and has beautiful large paintings. They didn't want to deliver the guide in English (not had in Portuguese or Spanish) because I haven't introduced a passport or a plane ticket because he had left at the hotel. I've never seen it in any Museum that I was, and I've been to several, of asking the passport or a plane ticket to provide the Museum Guide.

  • There are a lot of nice little museum in the area, you can visit a few in a day because of their sizes. They also have nice gardens.  more »

  • Great gallery, good size (not too big - you will have enough time to see and appreciate it all in an hour or two) with a great selection of Chagall work hung and curated partly by the artist himself. Was originally a museum showing his biblical message series, but the collection is now larger, albeit mostly still religious in nature. Highlights are his sculptures, particularly the ceramics (not seen many of these elsewhere), some fantastic stained glass, and a huge, spectacular mosaic over a pool outside. There's an interesting film as well if you have time (full run time nearly an hour) and a decent cafeteria. Bear in mind that there is no secure parking nearby - don't leave luggage in the car - and they won't let you in with a suitcase.
  • I enjoyed viewing the artworks, although Chagall isn't a favourite artist of mine. However the trip was spoilt by the surly attitude of the staff. We were unable to obtain the audio guides as you need photo ID! We had our E111 cards which have a passport number on them but that wasn't sufficient. I've been to art galleries all over the world and never been asked for photo ID to get an audio guide! Neither did they tell us that there was a phone app to get the information. We found it on our own but it didn't work. Quite a poor experience. Not worth the 10€ entrance fee nor the 30 min walk from Nice Old town.
  • A great museum, with a lovely garden too. It features several pieces of work of the artist, as well as interviews of him and short documentaries about him. Great place for learning more about Chagall's work and life.
  • Inspirational, peaceful. You could combine this visit with a 25 minute stroll over to the Matisse Museum and adjoining Archaeological Museum of Nice-Cimiez. Tip: Watch out for the closed days, but if it is closed you have plenty of other alternative museums/galleries to visit that day. But make sure to circle back to here another time.
  • Purpose-built for displaying his works. In danger of being too crowded like so many tourist venues. Pleasant but modest outdoor cafe and good specialist book concession. Difficult uphill location with poor public transport access and zero parking.
