#1 of 27 in Parks in Ariege
Grotte de Niaux are known for the high quality of their Magdalenian paintings, which were finished over 14,000 years ago. An 800 m (2,625 ft) route over wet, uneven ground brings you to the "Black Chamber,” where paintings of large Magdalenian mammals have an international reputation for their amazing quality. Over 100 highly detailed depictions in black outline ibex, bison, horses, and deer. Begin your trek by walking through narrow, dark passages to several impressive galleries before arriving in the Salon Noir, a massive rotunda with walls covered in paintings. Advance reservations are required. English tours are offered at certain times but slots fill up quickly. You can download or purchase a pamphlet with descriptions of each gallery. • A dive to the electric lamp aged 13000-18000. Fantastic and unforgettable. Plan to book online and put some good shoes (if possible). The floor isn't really flat.

  • Great place to visit in fantastic scenery. A great experience steeped in history. We had a fabulous English speaking guide who answered all the questions and was really engaging and informative about the caves. This is a cave experience where you MUST have mobility as it involves walking through the cave up and down on uneven surfaces. The only let down was the complaining of a woman who clearly hadn't read or had ignored the advice given about mobility and should have not come.
  • One of the very few caves where one can enter to directly experience Paleolithic art. Requires reservation for a guided hike 1 km into a mountain where turning into an alcove one comes face to face with bison images on the wall. The powerful images say "I am here" bridging 20,000 years.
  • Very nice site but I find that the captions are too imprecise and the development of outdoor exposure needs to be more modern and interactive
