Cathedrale St-Just, Narbonne
(4.4/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Although its construction was never finished, Cathedrale St-Just is a former cathedral and basilica minor--and, today, an official French national monument. The site has been a place of worship since 313 CE, shortly after Christianity became a legal religion. Nearly 1,000 years later, worships started to build a Gothic cathedral here. Not much remains of the building, but the existing structure is noteworthy. Two Roman columns from the former Forum, once used in the nave, are now in the cloister. The steeple has been largely restored, but little else of the architecture has been preserved, save for its white marble lintel and aedicule, which are on display at a nearby museum. • Only the choir was built and hence looks rather odd inside. We probably didn;t see it at it's best as their was a lot of renovation going on and hence scaffolding. It's in a good location however with...  more »
  • The first Basilica was erected at that point in 300 a.d., and later a cathedral in 800. What we see now, unfinished, dates back to 1200. During the French Revolution to end at 700 marble and stone figures that adorn the faces were removed, sfregiandole beyond repair. Only the Virgin of the bridge was saved from this iconoclastic fury and even today is one of the most venerated by Narbonne. Various miracles have been attributed to her and to testimony there are hundreds you votive offerings that surround it. The structure of the Cathedral is gigantic. The times are very high and yet slender columns appear. The choir of exquisite workmanship and size is one of the things we have to underline. Unfortunately the cloister and part of the Church is being restored, and it was not possible to visit them. Maybe the restoration started late, the structure is really deteriorated. Very bad for a historical excellence of this importance. Manuela and Alessandro Gori
