Château des ducs de Bretagne, Nantes

4.5
#1 of 140 in Sightseeing in Pays de la Loire
Castle Tourist Spot
You'll recognize the medieval Château des ducs de Bretagne by the bright white tufa stone that glistens in the sky as you approach it. This austere fortress is home to the Nantes History Museum and is the last castle of the Loire before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Recent renovations allow you to stroll along the inner courtyard, revealing a 15th-century ducal palace in Renaissance style. In sharp contrast with its rough exterior walls, this castle radiates a certain elegance owed to its fine stone carvings. The rampart walk offers a number of viewpoints of the fortress and its interior buildings and across the city. In the grounds, stroll around the moat and surrounding magnolia gardens. You can download a free app with a tour of the castle to your smartphone. • Beautiful setting and beautiful architecture - a very special place to see. The square inside is well worth a look as is the view from the ramparts. But it's a great photo from outside !  more »

  • A very interesting and extremely well done chronological tour of the history of Nantes; starting with a medieval sword and "canoe", and subsequently detailing the cultural, social, economic, artistic, etc... development of Nantes through to present day. Prepare to spend at least 2h (probably more).
  • A very old castle with a sterile view. If your are in the vicinity, it is okay to visit this site. For sure it is a very old building still standing, but it offers little or no visual attraction. From an architectural point of view, this site is a wonder place. This location is better to visit during the summer when they a have festival going on near by. Enjoy it with a taste of wine.
  • I was very excited to visit this place and got a little dissapointed when I saw that there is nothing inside the building. Would have been a lot better if more things were preserved within the castle. Looks a lot better from the outside than inside.
  • Don't miss it! This is one of the must-see places in Nantes. Access to the inner court, the moat and the ramparts is free, but the museum and indoor parts are not. You get a great view of Nantes from there and a peek into its Brittany heritage.
  • Well maintened, fun activities for children probably above 7 best. Well worth visiting.
