Château des ducs de Bretagne, Nantes
(4.5/5 based on 1,900+ reviews on the web)
You'll recognize the medieval Château des ducs de Bretagne by the bright white tufa stone that glistens in the sky as you approach it. This austere fortress is home to the Nantes History Museum and is the last castle of the Loire before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Recent renovations allow you to stroll along the inner courtyard, revealing a 15th-century ducal palace in Renaissance style. In sharp contrast with its rough exterior walls, this castle radiates a certain elegance owed to its fine stone carvings. The rampart walk offers a number of viewpoints of the fortress and its interior buildings and across the city. In the grounds, stroll around the moat and surrounding magnolia gardens. You can download a free app with a tour of the castle to your smartphone. • If you go through Nantes an obligatory visit. The castle is very retouched but gladly. Don't forget to devote at least two hours to visit its magnificent Museum.

  • A huge beautiful castle and tells of the history of Nantes have several floors depending on the time of the events. However with a stroller that's not practical, it must use the same elevator the handicapped but everyone footprints because they do not want to take the stairs to that greatly slowed the visit.

  • It was a good introduction to history of Nantes during renaissance. Only some of the descriptions were in English. Would have given five stars if there was more information in English and other languages.
  • Very good tour guides and a very interesting 'slave' tour to do with kids in college. Some rooms are more interesting than others...
  • Fortress imposente en plein coeur du centre-ville de Nantes.
  • Good audio visuals. English audio set available. Good exhibitions. Layout was a bit confusing.
  • Ancient place with interesting history. The castle is awesome and you can spend a lovely time there.
