Château des ducs de Bretagne, Nantes

(4.5/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
You'll recognize the medieval Château des ducs de Bretagne by the bright white tufa stone that glistens in the sky as you approach it. This austere fortress is home to the Nantes History Museum and is the last castle of the Loire before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Recent renovations allow you to stroll along the inner courtyard, revealing a 15th-century ducal palace in Renaissance style. In sharp contrast with its rough exterior walls, this castle radiates a certain elegance owed to its fine stone carvings. The rampart walk offers a number of viewpoints of the fortress and its interior buildings and across the city. In the grounds, stroll around the moat and surrounding magnolia gardens. You can download a free app with a tour of the castle to your smartphone. • Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne, we went through and from the inside. Here are exhibits from the history of the Castle and the city. A lot is dedicated to maritime trades, colonization and slavery. I appreciate that it's exposed, because it belongs to history. On the next floor it is possible to interactively look into a century and see how the city looked like what was being constructed, etc. In the same room is running a film about the construction of the Castle/castle, but only in French. Overall, the whole exposure will give a nice picture of the development of the whole city.

  • Initially a bit disappointed that the castle is actually a Museum, but soon I was thrilled about the content of this Museum! The history of Nantes is perfectly explained, ranging from the middle ages to the present time of course through slavery and its abolition... I'll be back, for sure! Allow 2 hours if you want to take your time.

  • Fantastic set of medieval architecture. Large walled and moated castle. Can be seen the penalty on all sides. Very conserved. Unmissable on visit to Nantes.

  • It was a good introduction to history of Nantes during renaissance. Only some of the descriptions were in English. Would have given five stars if there was more information in English and other languages.
  • Very good tour guides and a very interesting 'slave' tour to do with kids in college. Some rooms are more interesting than others...
  • Fortress imposente en plein coeur du centre-ville de Nantes.
  • Good audio visuals. English audio set available. Good exhibitions. Layout was a bit confusing.
  • Ancient place with interesting history. The castle is awesome and you can spend a lovely time there.
