Château des ducs de Bretagne, Nantes

(4.5/5 based on 2,000+ reviews on the web)
You'll recognize the medieval Château des ducs de Bretagne by the bright white tufa stone that glistens in the sky as you approach it. This austere fortress is home to the Nantes History Museum and is the last castle of the Loire before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Recent renovations allow you to stroll along the inner courtyard, revealing a 15th-century ducal palace in Renaissance style. In sharp contrast with its rough exterior walls, this castle radiates a certain elegance owed to its fine stone carvings. The rampart walk offers a number of viewpoints of the fortress and its interior buildings and across the city. In the grounds, stroll around the moat and surrounding magnolia gardens. You can download a free app with a tour of the castle to your smartphone. • Tour who deserves that we linger there a good half day so we learn nothing about the course of the 32 rooms of this fabulous Museum. We plan to come back because the walls were not available and the morning was well short in order to fully enjoy this visit. Free the first Sunday of every month is a great initiative for families.

  • Visit free family for the 1st Sunday of the month. Very informative, well laid out Museum. We enjoyed.

  • Although it is not strictly a castle of the Loire Valley, it is worth to see it approach. Located in the Centre of Nantes, stands out above all the Renaissance part of the inner courtyard.

  • It was a good introduction to history of Nantes during renaissance. Only some of the descriptions were in English. Would have given five stars if there was more information in English and other languages.
  • Very good tour guides and a very interesting 'slave' tour to do with kids in college. Some rooms are more interesting than others...
  • Fortress imposente en plein coeur du centre-ville de Nantes.
  • Good audio visuals. English audio set available. Good exhibitions. Layout was a bit confusing.
  • Ancient place with interesting history. The castle is awesome and you can spend a lovely time there.
