Château des ducs de Bretagne, Nantes

4.5
#1 of 77 in Historic Sites in Pays de la Loire
You'll recognize the medieval Château des ducs de Bretagne by the bright white tufa stone that glistens in the sky as you approach it. This austere fortress is home to the Nantes History Museum and is the last castle of the Loire before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Recent renovations allow you to stroll along the inner courtyard, revealing a 15th-century ducal palace in Renaissance style. In sharp contrast with its rough exterior walls, this castle radiates a certain elegance owed to its fine stone carvings. The rampart walk offers a number of viewpoints of the fortress and its interior buildings and across the city. In the grounds, stroll around the moat and surrounding magnolia gardens. You can download a free app with a tour of the castle to your smartphone. The restoration of the castle is beautiful, especially the facades atmosphere on course. Inside the Museum of the history of the city is remarkable, but it's almost too much anything can be interesting! Installations, videos and interactive terminals allow to vary the pleasures but the whole visit takes at least a 1/2 day.

Chateau ws great place to visit, free to get into the grounds and the battlements, and entry inside was only 8€ per Adult and children under 18 were free. Lockers to put your bags and you got the money back. Coffee and drinks reasonably prices, food overpriced but easy to walk outside to local cafe/restaurant. Well worth a visit.

Nice Castle which is free to walk around most of it including the ramparts. Quite a few steps so not great to haul strollers - leave them in the courtyard. Water park across the street as well.

Very grand and imposing Chateau in the heart of the city of Nantes. We were going to explore the whole Chateau but the summer heat wave was too much. Luckily there's lots of cafes and restaurants near by.
