Château des ducs de Bretagne, Nantes

Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web
You'll recognize the medieval Château des ducs de Bretagne by the bright white tufa stone that glistens in the sky as you approach it. This austere fortress is home to the Nantes History Museum and is the last castle of the Loire before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Recent renovations allow you to stroll along the inner courtyard, revealing a 15th-century ducal palace in Renaissance style. In sharp contrast with its rough exterior walls, this castle radiates a certain elegance owed to its fine stone carvings. The rampart walk offers a number of viewpoints of the fortress and its interior buildings and across the city. In the grounds, stroll around the moat and surrounding magnolia gardens. You can download a free app with a tour of the castle to your smartphone. • Came in here expecting an entrance fee, but unless you visit the exhibitions walking around the courtyard, enjoying the park-like grassy areas, or walking the ramparts is free!
  • Nice ride, entrance fee free outside to inside, nice garden, nice I recommend!

  • Visit alone, in couple or in family. In the city centre. Allow two hours mini. First the castle itself, passageways, walls, etc. Then the Museum, on four levels (elevator available, benches for resting). Journey into the history of Nantes and France, spotlight on the slavery period. Finally, the building of the exhibitions. At the moment, great expo on the icons. If possible set a 2nd visit to complete the impression. Andel54

  • Great castle with free entry (except for the exhibitions) so you can get all around the ramparts and use the picnic area. Chic café too.
  • Huge and mighty castle. Massive high walls, making you feel the weight of power and history. Open for insightful and impressing walks on the wall and inside. Tours, café and shop
  • Very noble, beautiful and interesting architecture. Scenes from all sides of the castle are fantastic.
  • Simply beautiful. In the summer the are plenty of festivals and concerts. I saw a show/concert where the musicians were in the water flowing like water lilies. :)
  • A must visit in Nantes, good museum about the city's history.
