Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne, Nantes

You'll recognize the medieval Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne by the bright white tufa stone that glistens in the sky as you approach it. This austere fortress is home to the Nantes History Museum and is the last castle of the Loire before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Recent renovations allow you to stroll along the inner courtyard, revealing a 15th-century ducal palace in Renaissance style. In sharp contrast with its rough exterior walls, this castle radiates a certain elegance owed to its fine stone carvings. The rampart walk offers a number of viewpoints of the fortress and its interior buildings and across the city. In the grounds, stroll around the moat and surrounding magnolia gardens. • The visit to the courtyard, the moat and walls is free. It is a must-see if you are in Nantes. The interior is payment.

  • I urge you to visit this castle if you visit Nantes! It is very well preserved and admission is free. There is a very nice and small historical evidence everywhere! The slide was not available when we went there... too bad!

  • Passage to Nantes, for business, I still took for a night to make a visit and the castle was a must-see, so I share with you my impressions. Nantes is a very pleasant city to live and I stayed longer to discover all these charms. I was impressed by the respect of motorists for pedestrians and Yes! I loved strolled the streets without goals and discover at the corner of the streets of nice things. I stumbled upon the Castle by strolling and it is really beautiful!

  • A very impressive building when looking at its entrance. The castle looks better from outside I think. Very well kept, neat lawn. A must see when visiting Nantes
  • I only walked through the grounds and around the ramparts, hearing about the incredible story of Anne de Bretagne. As my sister from America said, "so the Middle Ages really did exist!" Such a beautiful place!
  • One of the main attraction to see in Nantes. I liked walking over the walls to have a nice view of the city
  • Many room and lots of history. You can easily spend 3h there. It gives you a nice overview of Nantes' history.
  • Beautiful building, very detailed tour. It only costs €5 to tour the museum on your own, and the exhibit is fantastic. Wonderful artifacts from as early as the 11th century, in an authentic but modernized setting.
