Chateau de Goulaine, Nantes
(3.4/5 based on 140+ reviews on the web)
There is more than just castle at Chateau de Goulaine: there is a butterfly aviary, the LU Museum displaying the art and history of local biscuit brand Le Petit Beurre, and the oldest commercial vineyards in the world. The butterfly sanctuary awakes the child in you with it's friendly, fluttery residents. Biscuits may not be your cup of tea, but they are integral to the development of the city's local economy and the vintage posters are sure to sway to the pastry's side with their nostalgia for home.

This menagerie of curios and wines has belonged to the Goulaine family for over 1,000 years, with each generation adding their own special touch to the chateau’s exhibits. Fortunately, the must see exhibit is also the must drink exhibit. With the longest running tradition of wine-making, you’ll want to taste what was worth preserving through the ages. Make Chateau de Goulaine a centerpiece of your Nantes vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Nantes travel itinerary maker.

  • Beautiful french style castle integrated in the city. The gardens are lovely and well cared, as well as the inside which you can visit buying an extra ticket!
  • After reading some lukewarm comments, I was hesitant to visit this castle. I was pleasantly surprised. The chateau has nice rooms great ceilings and painted walls. The Museum READ, it has a very nice collection of posters, tables, images, and advertising items. Everything is very interesting.

  • Disappointment, we visited the Castle this weekend of October 23: no guided tour (lack of staff), more greenhouse to butterflies, no access to the garden. It took just 5 pieces of the icy Castle and READ exhibition. We had both enjoyed the guide last year and the exteriors. We will not back off season.

  • Beautiful castle especially for wedding
  • excellent guided visit of castle. Butterfly house great fun. Good family visit.
  • A nice discovery! A beautiful little castle, presenting the relationship between Smith County and the history of the Kings of France. Of course: the official LU Museum! A must see!... perhaps more to READ than the Castle Museum, but no entry for one without the other ;-)

  • Visit to the Museum read and a part of the friendly Castle. Unfortunately for the cause of marriage, we did have access to the cellars and gardens which is too bad for the price of €9... The rate should be adapted to that you can visit. So any in-store purchase because we were disappointed of the value for money.

  • Visit the interesting Castle, clear explanations. Beautiful exhibition on the history of LU. Pretty cool to see the evolution of ads and the works of various artists tribute to cookies of the brand, including the famous petit-beurre!
