Chateau de Montsoreau, Montsoreau

2.5
#12 of 25 in Historic Sites in Maine et Loire
Castle Tourist Spot
Chateau de Montsoreau is built directly on the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers. This gives it spectacular views across the water to the region's riverbank landscapes. It isn’t just the view outside that is impressive, the interior of the chateau is pristine with vaulted ceilings and limestone construction that has survived the centuries gracefully. The chateau completed renovation in 1999, when an 18 room multimedia tour was installed. You’ll delight in the guided media experience through this UNESCO world hertiage site. Chateau de Montsoreau is an example of a happy marriage of the old and new. • Passing through the area for the holidays, we stopped at the castle of Montsoreau. A real disappointment! We have learned to our arrival at the counter that the latter was transformed into a Museum of modern art last year. Either we'll take this lack of information to our account. But the rest of the tour has been a disappointment... The beautiful architecture contains only parts empty, and emptied of their soul. The wall was repainted in white (very poorly repainted also). No furniture, almost no information on the history of this castle, the big empty. Some unfortunate "work of art" (if it can be qualified as well) are dispersed in sadly distorted parts. In short, if you're not contemporary art lover, go your way!

  • The castle of Montsoreau is an ambitious site that celebrates a beautiful marriage between the traditional heritage of Anjou and international contemporary art. The architecture of this patrimony castel built in 1450 by Jean II de Chambes, advised King Charles VII and Louis XI, reveals the boldness of a lover of art who built his ideal home to even the bed of the river. Today the Castle, beautifully restored, houses a collection of disconcerting and exciting of the English Language and Art collective, which upsets the perception of the work, the role the artist and the Museum institution, through talking, words and music.

  • What a disappointment! We take a 5 year old child so that he discovered the inside of a castle and its different parts. The hostess had specified us that the furniture had been removed, but we did not expect this sidereal gap (of furniture) and its walls painted with lime (shocking!). It became a castle without a soul... Access is difficult and poor exhibition in explanations... The first concern was for us the history of the Castle... I prefer the castle of Montsoreau of my memories...

  • The contemporary art exhibition is strange. You don't even want to take a look at it. The castle looks nice outside, but there's nothing inside. The only thing interesting is when you go on top of the castle, you have a nice view. It's not worth to pay so much for so few things.
  • It is 50% more expensive than the nearby larger chateau at Saumur, and all that it contains for the extra price is a sparse, pretentious 'art' collection. The best part of the chateau is the outside, and that is free!
  • It's way overpriced. Nothing of interest on the inside, which is all but empty. Nice views of the Loire from the terrace, but that's it.
  • Romantic. Sunset amazing
  • Not big but very pretty!!!
