Castle Tourist Spot
Perched 1,200 m (3,900 ft) in the air, the grounds of the current Chateau de Montsegur have a fiery past. More than 200 Cathar priests were found dead in this legendary place, burned after being accused as heretics for their Christian faith. Though it is described as one of the Cathar castles, the current chateau is actually from a later period and not the work of the Cathars. The fortress was remodeled during the latter half of the 13th century. Seven centuries later, flames of the past still fuel contemplation and rumor at this site. Take a guided tour in English or walk the grounds without a guide at your leisure. • It's a bit of a trek to reach the castle, but worth every step for the view from the top. Go, take a camera, water and get to the summit. You will not be disappointed. The village below is worth a loo...  more »
  • After parking the car, we walked toward the pog (which reminds me of a volcanic core mountain). Atop the pog are the castle ruins. As we walked at the bottom of the pog, my heart began to race and I c...  more »
  • This Cather Castle/Monastry is perched on the very top of a "Pog" or small very steep mountain. It can be seen from many miles away and in return the view from the top is quite amazing. Be sure to vis...  more »

  • Climbing the narrow path towards Cháteau de Montségur is a 30 minute journey through the fairytale landscape surrounded with the green mountains with the snow at their peaks. If you know the history of Montségur it will take you to the time of its glory especially if you climb alone or in a group of few. Breathtaking landscape with eagles in the sky can't leave anyone indifferent. When you reach the walls of this magnificent castle these feelings become even more intense. With staggering view from this eagles nest you just want to sit and enjoy every second on this holistic place. At the gates and the walls of Montségur, blood on the stones of the citadel still radiates unrelenting energy.
  • An amazing piece of history the site of the last Cathar settlement in France. To even begin to imagine as you climb and explore how it was built and imagine rubbing shoulders withthe ghosts of the past is simply amazing. Stunning views of the surrounding foothills of the Pyrenees in a hidden gem area of France.
  • Lovely views, difficult climb not to be taken lightly. Not the most impressive castle but interesting history.
  • Knowing the cruel history of Catholic genocide at this ruined site, where 200 people were burned alive, leaves one feeling very subdued. It's a great monument to visit and reflect.
  • Si vous avez les jambes pour monter en haut, faites la visite guidée !
