Chateau de Montsegur, Montsegur
Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Perched 1,200 m (3,900 ft) in the air, the grounds of the current Chateau de Montsegur have a fiery past. More than 200 Cathar priests were found dead in this legendary place, burned after being accused as heretics for their Christian faith. Though it is described as one of the Cathar castles, the current chateau is actually from a later period and not the work of the Cathars. The fortress was remodeled during the latter half of the 13th century. Seven centuries later, flames of the past still fuel contemplation and rumor at this site. Take a guided tour in English or walk the grounds without a guide at your leisure. Who were the Cathares who lived in this place... How did they held off 10 00 men for 11 months. And why did they choose to burn alive...

Very nice place with a tragic history
It's a good walk up there. Just four walls and open to the sky when you get there. Wear good shoes. A bit overrated and the Cather bit is now purely commercial caused by the area tourist authorities. Good for the exercise though.
A climb to get your heart rate going and amazing views when you get there.
Che katiOne of the most important sites to visit in Midi Pyrenees and certainly the best guided France. Thanks Fabrice Chambon. History lovers can feast with this apostrophe in the Middle so important age and if can interpreted in our books or in our schools: it is certain that here, "we speak of a people who had suffered and lost. While usually it is rather an apologist for the winners". Walt Disney tells us... would say Fabrice with a certain justified sarcasm... Since 1975 I went up 200 times and never I don't me in tire... the rest of my soul is on this 'pog '.show original
