Chateau de Montsegur, Montsegur
(4.6/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
Perched 1,200 m (3,900 ft) in the air, the grounds of the current Chateau de Montsegur have a fiery past. More than 200 Cathar priests were found dead in this legendary place, burned after being accused as heretics for their Christian faith. Though it is described as one of the Cathar castles, the current chateau is actually from a later period and not the work of the Cathars. The fortress was remodeled during the latter half of the 13th century. Seven centuries later, flames of the past still fuel contemplation and rumor at this site. Take a guided tour in English or walk the grounds without a guide at your leisure. • During our recent visit to Laguedoc/Occitania we traced the path (more or less) of the Albigensian Crusade. Naturally one must wind up at Chateau de Montsegur. As we climbed the path we read Zoe Olden...  more »
  • A place of history, moving in a breathtaking setting. On the other hand, if you do not guided tour (enquire before coming on schedules) you're missing all... Provide a good 1/2 hour. Our guide even managed to Captivate and do reflect our teenager of 17 years ;-))

  • It is the rendezvous of lovers of medieval history, but it's also the most fantastic view of the surrounding area offered by the site. Attention! It will take 20-25 minutes to climb very steep before access to the Castle. Provide a good pair of shoes, or even a walking stick because the markets are high and the often slippery rock? Above, if the weather is favourable, the panorama is exceptional: the Valley of the Quercorb, the descent to Lavelanet and Mirepoix, and on the other side of the Pyrenees looming. The Castle, however, is impressive to sobriety: only the walls have come down to us, the doors do not have wings, and it remains of floors and roofs that the holes of the frames in the walls. But he exudes a certain emotion that is accentuated by the many panels that guide the visitor along the way. Not to be missed!
