Chateau de Montreuil-Bellay, Montreuil-Bellay

The town of Montreuil-Bellay was ransacked and burned during the French Wars of Religion, but the sturdy fortress, , was barely touched. Like most French chateaux, ownership of the castle changed several times, but lucky for you it survived all the upheaval to make a premium wine. With 650 m (2,132 ft) of ramparts and 16 towers, it is one the most awe-inspiring chateaux in the region. The grounds rest beside a lake and include picture perfect medieval gardens, a fully furnished ground floor, and vaulted cellars. Understated elegance and attention to detail is evident in the furnishings. After you delight in your royal surroundings, you can top it off with a tasting of the local vines. • Private castle, the owners come from time to time. the guides know its history. The photos are prohibited inside the Castle (rooms, living rooms, kitchens,...) but we can do outside. Possibility to taste various wines and buy.

  • Sadly we had to leave before the guided tour was due to start (it's the only way you are allowed to visit I gather). But from the outside it is magnificent. The owner of the hotel we were staying in s...  more »

  • In order to visit the interior of the chateau you must take a guided tour. The tour I took was in French and it lasted one hour. The chateau provided a detailed English language write-up which was very well done. Photos were only allowed in the kitchen which is in a building which is not attached to the chateau. It's a shame because the place is really beautiful.
  • Beautiful chateau. I highly reccomend a walk among the river in the park near the castle.
  • Really really pretty grounds. Still used as a home at times. One of the better Châteaus
  • Lovely Castle. Guide friendly but the avalanche on a garish tone & Robotics made is picked up after 5 minutes. Too bad... In addition, he is a bit steep to prohibit in the (so-called) parts "private photos" while the postcards of these same parts are on sale in the shop!...

  • The Castle and its garden are very beautiful! Wine tasting and wine sales are a plus. Breakfast a little disappointed by the free visit lacking to my taste d indications and d interactivity. It also lacks a family offer with a fun activity for children.
