Chateau de Montreuil-Bellay, Montreuil-Bellay

The town of Montreuil-Bellay was ransacked and burned during the French Wars of Religion, but the sturdy fortress, , was barely touched. Like most French chateaux, ownership of the castle changed several times, but lucky for you it survived all the upheaval to make a premium wine. With 650 m (2,132 ft) of ramparts and 16 towers, it is one the most awe-inspiring chateaux in the region. The grounds rest beside a lake and include picture perfect medieval gardens, a fully furnished ground floor, and vaulted cellars. Understated elegance and attention to detail is evident in the furnishings. After you delight in your royal surroundings, you can top it off with a tasting of the local vines. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Montreuil-Bellay holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Chateau de Montreuil-Bellay and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The castle of Montreuil-Bellay offers two different tickets: one for the free tour of part of its walls and gardens, and the other for a guided tour of his interiors (including this same free access to gardens and walls). In a little over an hour, and with very nice guides, we discover the charm of a private castle still inhabited by its owners. Less than a dozen of pieces in all, where each element and object has a history in connection with its successive occupants. The price of the tickets is located in the usual range of this type of houses. As in any old building, the accessibility of some parts of the castle is not always of the most simple, some visitors might need assistance in some stairs.

  • Their architecture is more or less grandiose, sometimes heavy, sometimes pierced, and this one, imposing, not portends a delicious to visit home. We always go to the most well-known castles, and it's a shame, because some are not on the front line in the minds of the castles of the Loire. Montreuil Bellay is worth a visit. Wineries that suggested the nearby vineyard to the heights where is fair in fair, old but little ostentatious sets, this visit is a marvel. The girl guide is a lot because it leads his career with humor and skill. We spend an hour or two very nice, much more than in Saumur, where the Castle, attractive outside, disappoints a bit in its walls. Before leaving the castle of Montreuil Bellay, a small jump in the sale of wine is worth it: very reasonable prices for quality wines. Do not miss.

  • The whole of the Castle and the Church dominates the Valley and the discovery of the place is superb. We n could not visit the Castle but only the Abbey Church which is also worth a visit. Beautiful architectural complex. We will be back.

  • In order to visit the interior of the chateau you must take a guided tour. The tour I took was in French and it lasted one hour. The chateau provided a detailed English language write-up which was very well done. Photos were only allowed in the kitchen which is in a building which is not attached to the chateau. It's a shame because the place is really beautiful.
  • Beautiful chateau. I highly reccomend a walk among the river in the park near the castle.
  • Really really pretty grounds. Still used as a home at times. One of the better Châteaus
  • Beautiful complex, consisting of an old Castle, a younger Castle and a large church. In the winter months, the castle is not open to the public. The Church on the site is of 17:00 09:00 to open, but you can see further from there, nothing of the castle itself.
