Montpellier
"Montpellier is a modern, compact, and fast-growing city about 10 km (6 mi) inland from the Mediterranean coast with an active, youthful vibe. While the city has few major historical monuments, its old town called Crest is lined with solid medieval foundations and vaulted ceilings, overbuilt with modern additions to meet the needs of today's busy urban community. You can walk across the entire city center quickly, but it's worth slowing down to enjoy the bustle of the thriving metropolis and the architecture of the lively Antigone district.
Start walking from the Place de la Comédie, walk past the Ibis Montpellier Comédie hotel, through the Polygone shopping mall, and down the entire Antigone district, until you reach the small harbor, about 20 minutes at a moderate pace. You can reflect on the determined neo-classical architecture--it's upper arched peaks, symmetry, patterns, and scale. When you reach the waterfront, turn around for a visual of the entire district--rounded façade buildings, pilasters, and pediments converging to make a whole image surrounding you in a half-open arc. You'll find plenty of dining choices for every appetite from traditional to contemporary and from touristy to authentic along the riverfront."
