Lascaux II, Montignac

(2.5/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
Lascaux II features replicas of the famed Lascaux Cave's 17,000-year-old Paleolithic paintings, which are only 200 m (650 ft) away. Discovered in 1940 and opened to the public in 1948, the original cave attracted 1,200 visitors a day. By 1955, carbon dioxide and light had begun to damage the paintings. In 1963, the cave was shut down to preserve the art. The museum opened in 1983. Look for a replica of the cave's Great Hall of Bulls and the Painted Gallery. A visit to Lascaux II represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Montignac itinerary planner to plot your vacation.

  • We had a great time with your family for the visit of this replica of the Lascaux cave. This is a visit to do which we out amazed. Only downside, the replica contains only a tiny part of the cave, the visit seems so short. Council, best to book their visit in advance by internet because both the number of visitors is limited, and schedules are spaced according to the languages.

  • There are quite a few caves in the Vézère valley that boast prehistoric cave paintings. Lascaux II is the cave to see. You go to the others because the paintings are prehistoric. You go to Lascaux II ...  more »
  • Demonstrates the reconstituted Lascaux. Interesting, of course. While you will not see with their own eyes, to understand the magnitude of extremely difficult. The Museum has a café. Comforting hot soup with chestnuts on a cold January day. Here are the cons:-it is unclear why the Group deduce on the street in front of the entrance to the cave. Want to show the neighborhood and location of other caves, not much point in this: the information obtained is not worth spending time on this (especially in winter)-why give this entire arsenal of gadgets? It only disturbs. inside the cave it still useless. And then, in the showroom, not all of them. -Lighting in the cave is not very good (they're trying to recreate what they saw openers caves, but we came to see cave paintings), however, this is very debatable question. THESE SHORTCOMINGS-NOT MORE THAN CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Go there to eat, what to see. Remember that the cave is supported by constant temperature 13 degrees (so that in January we warm and in summer you can catch a cold). Taking pictures in the cave, you can only in a special room at the exit from it.
