Lascaux II, Montignac

3.5
#1 of 16 in Nature in Dordogne
Lascaux II features replicas of the famed Lascaux Cave's 17,000-year-old Paleolithic paintings, which are only 200 m (650 ft) away. Discovered in 1940 and opened to the public in 1948, the original cave attracted 1,200 visitors a day. By 1955, carbon dioxide and light had begun to damage the paintings. In 1963, the cave was shut down to preserve the art. The museum opened in 1983. Look for a replica of the cave's Great Hall of Bulls and the Painted Gallery. • This is a copy of the original cave because it is closed due to fungi. The newly constructed cave is beautiful and the tour is good. In the beginning you have the feeling of being in a real cave walk around.

  • a beautiful replica a pity we can not enjoy the original. I came out of the visit with lots of interrogations.Comment of the individuals of that era could they have such control of the stroke?

  • Be in the Perigord and not to visit the cave of Lascaux II, it would almost be a crime. It is a high place of prehistory. It's pretty. With this ticket, you little visited another cave with videos rather interesting. And more in the summer, it's cool

  • What an amazing place! Don't be confused by the different options at Lascaux. This is a tour at the original site as you are taken through a complete, life-sized, and incredibly accurate replica of the original Lascaux caves. It's breathtaking. If you only have time to visit one site in Lascaux I highly recommend this one. The brand new museum down the hill is lovely but just different. The original caves are no longer accessible because of the unfortunate affects of years of exposure to tourists, and if you want to get as close to experiencing the real thing Lascaux II is what you want. They offer tours in English and I recommend you arrive early to your tickets and walk around the area. They also have a little gift shop with educational and fun items for purchase.
  • 3 étoiles dans le Guide vert Michelin! Café sur site recommandé par le Guardian.
  • Brand new high tech visitor centre (opened Dec 2016) and guided tours, also digital tablet to translate and explain. Superbly well conceived and thought provoking. Excellent cafe too.
  • A brilliant reproduction of one of the most significant pre-history cave art sites. Excellent guide provided many thought provoking theories of the meaning (if any) of the depictions.
  • This is a fascinating place to visit. This replicates the first two Chambers. It is an exact replica down to the centimeter using the painting techniques they used originally to paint the caves. It should be noted that you can't go into the original caves due to the human interaction with a human breath that causes decay of the paintings Just a note to Future Travelers - they are building another replica of the caves just outside of town. This replica will have more chambers. Our group was told that the completion date of this new facility will be done around December of 2016. Here's a note specifically for photographers. No photography is allowed.
