Montcaret Archaeological Site, Montcaret

#149 of 326 in Things to do in Dordogne
See layers of French history come together at Montcaret Archaeological Site. The museum presents artifacts found on site from the area's first inhabitants, cave-dwellers of the Neolithic period. You'll also be able to view the ruins of an aristocratic Roman family's home from the 1st century, featuring lovely mosiacs and the remains of a medieval church. The church's monks inadvertently buried their dead inside the ruins of the villa that predated them by hundreds of years. Guided tours are available in French, but you can also opt for a self-guided tour with an English-language leaflet. • No Panel to report the entry... You have to turn around the building to find. Small speech quickly to the site after payment, then we're doing with the provided issue. He was missing in our opinion, the panels on the ruins with visualization of terms, explanations on techniques of earthenware, renovation of craftsmen work and for the methods used. So time to visit 15 min. That's good... Nothing more to see!

  • Great place. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Really interesting.
  • If you are interested in the Gallo Romans then this is a must visit site. Ruins of a vast villa with baths, heating system and some impressive mosaics. A mediaeval church is built on part of the site, the monks used stone from the villa.
  • Absolutely beautiful. Very interesting. An archaeological treasure to see
