Must see · World heritage site · Garden · Religious Site
One of the oldest and most completely intact Cistercian abbeys in Europe, Abbaye de Fontenay was built in 1118 with a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Although slightly rundown, the original complex comprising the church, dormitory, cloister, chapter house, caldarium, dovecote, and forge all retain their original architecture, except the refectory. • Beautiful. Visited in the off-season and my daughter and I were the only two visiting at the time. Very peaceful and one can have fun imagining the daily lives of monks here nearly 900 years ago! If you are in the Cote d'Or, definitely make it a stop. You will not be disappointed. Even trout for the young ones to spy.
  • One of my favourite Architectural and historical places in the world
  • A wonderful experience one not to be missed. Perhaps a few English translations for us Brits. That apart there is a leaflet outlining the history of the Abbey. Well worth a visit.
  • Very interesting place to visit. The buildings are well preserved and restored. A guided tour is available but only in French. However, the leaflet provided can be obtained in English as well as other languages. This has a plan of the site and a good amount of detail about the history and use of the various structures. There are pleasant gardens surrounding the Abbey. Parking is easy. There are shared toilet facilities. Some refreshments are available. There is a gift shop of course! A peaceful place.
  • Truly remarkable place. If possible, consider arriving after 3pm. We arrived Sunday 4pm and practically had the entire place to ourselves.
