#1 of 38 in Parks in Bourgogne-Franche-Comte
Art Museum History Museum
One of the oldest and most completely intact Cistercian abbeys in Europe, Abbaye de Fontenay was built in 1118 with a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Although slightly rundown, the original complex comprising the church, dormitory, cloister, chapter house, caldarium, dovecote, and forge all retain their original architecture, except the refectory. • Famous monastery forge. Very pretty gardens and buildings and churches. Monks here pioneered the water hammer for working metals.  more »
  • What the Monks accomplished in this swamp is truly amazing. We should be so innovative today! This is a must stop on your adventure and another Unesco heritage site.  more »

  • Exceptional place. Unique as each Cistercian place is. Here are beauty, silence ,contemplation. Here are medieval intelligence, ability, craftsmanship and balance in the hands of modest powerful believers at their best. Forget the world and its noisy nonsense! Enter each building with the respect you owe to the work of something beyond you. Don't interrupt the prayers of the stone, the blessing of light, the call of silence. Marc Thierry-Wilkinson/Paris
  • Absolute must to see. Beautifully restored and maintained. Very serene
  • A must go in this area. Nice and quiet, with rich history which often ignored.
  • You should prioritize a visit here. Recommended especially for nice weather days and when need a little peace. We went in mid-August and place had no crowds...made for great photos and videos. Take a lunch of sausage, cheese and bread and chill on the grass. For the car-less or ambitious, there is a trail from Montbard that cuts through the forest, but it is hard to find and follow sometimes (a google search can give some hints). Has some steep parts so wear good shoes. It is a nice walk, though the return walk could be less fun.
  • I love architecture and this reminded me of so many other places that I've visited with colonnaded cloisters. This is in great shape for it's age. Well worth a visit if your in the area.
