Abbaye de Fontenay, Montbard

(4.7/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
One of the oldest and most completely intact Cistercian abbeys in Europe, Abbaye de Fontenay was built in 1118 with a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. Although slightly rundown, the original complex comprising the church, dormitory, cloister, chapter house, caldarium, dovecote, and forge all retain their original architecture, except the refectory. • Frame exceptional but lifeless, what was to be the case when the monks lived in this place, no medicinal garden, pool of water without fish, no chairs to gather (or not) in the Abbey...

  • As sober as could be a Cistercian Abbey, Burgundy monument out strength and serenity in a natural setting and gardens of dream. These buildings stripped of unnecessary ornaments are masterfully and are still marked by the soul of the original inhabitants. Of all beauty.

  • I can only agree with all the good reviews. Place very well restored and maintained. Church and Cistercian cloister of a sober architecture and of great beauty. Nice dorm directly overlooking the Church, interesting forge. Really excellent staff and guide.

  • Exceptional place. Unique as each Cistercian place is. Here are beauty, silence ,contemplation. Here are medieval intelligence, ability, craftsmanship and balance in the hands of modest powerful believers at their best. Forget the world and its noisy nonsense! Enter each building with the respect you owe to the work of something beyond you. Don't interrupt the prayers of the stone, the blessing of light, the call of silence. Marc Thierry-Wilkinson/Paris
  • You should prioritize a visit here. Recommended especially for nice weather days and when need a little peace. We went in mid-August and place had no crowds...made for great photos and videos. Take a lunch of sausage, cheese and bread and chill on the grass. For the car-less or ambitious, there is a trail from Montbard that cuts through the forest, but it is hard to find and follow sometimes (a google search can give some hints). Has some steep parts so wear good shoes. It is a nice walk, though the return walk could be less fun.
  • I love architecture and this reminded me of so many other places that I've visited with colonnaded cloisters. This is in great shape for it's age. Well worth a visit if your in the area.
  • A real treasure the garden and grounds were beautiful on an spring day. The buildings are very well maintained. A must see.
  • Very peaceful site with great history and well preserved.
