Musee du Desert, Mialet

4.6
#5 of 32 in Museums in Gard
Once the house of Roland Laporte, the Camisard leader, Musee du Desert traces the history of Protestantism in the region, specifically in the Cévennes. The name is a reference to the Désert period, the time during which the practice of Protestant faith was illegal in France (1685-1787). You'll see a wide range of artifacts and documents of the period, including the preaching chairs that the pastors used, designed so that they could be easily transported and hidden. The noteworthy historical artifacts and the well-preserved village setting make this a popular museum. • Although Catholic, I came 3 times in this Museum, and I will come back. This story is now old enough to be common to us all. But what do not withdraw from the violence of history against the protestants. This violence, this desire to stigmatize some groups are nevertheless still alive. The quality of speakers makes the exciting visit.

  • Highly recommended a visit
  • Museum dealing with the history of protestant worship, of repression and resistance of the followers of this cult when the revocation of the edict of Nantes. Many documents and objects are on display. The Museum also presents real life conditions of the huguenots at this time with the reconstitution of a Cévennes home.

  • Wonderful Museum built on a Protestant home. The Museum explains the history of the Camisards Huguenot protestants in the region of the Cévennes, who rioted after the revocation of the edict of Nantes. Because the Camisards were very attached to the Holy Scriptures, we find on-site a nice collection of bibles from eras, which some have been reproduced in miniature, which allowed better then hide controls. Very uplifting visit on religious freedom, and the right to be different!

  • The Museum of the Desert makes us discover (or rediscover) the history of Protestantism in France through the Camisards. A place where the testimony of these persecuted Christians calls because of their loyalty and their faith despite the persecution. Very edifying, to visit absolutely!
