Old Chateau Cemetery, Menton

4.7
A beautiful cemetery, Old Chateau Cemetery, is easily accessible and presents the most amazing views of the undulating vineyards below it. If you are fond of walking, then perhaps walking to the church located on a niche in the southeast of church hill, is a very good idea. It will take you through the intoxicating beauty of the cypress gardens sprawled around the church. The simplicity of the brick and stone structure, the austerity and the peaceful nature of the place makes it a spiritual getaway from the humdrum of city life. Old Chateau Cemetery is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Menton Edition.

  • First, it is earned, but walking... to get to the cemetery established in place of the old Castle. Then, the surprise of the magnificent view of the graves in all languages, Prince, baron, and some celebrities: William Web Ellis (rugby), Charles Carroll of Carrolton (American Hospital in Neuilly). Surprise: almost none falls floral...

  • Peaceful and atmospheric place to visit, worth the climb to get there. Also, worth visiting for rugby fans.  more »
  • If you like visiting cemeteries, as I do, this is a must! Having done the visit of the Pere Lachaise in Paris with Thierry Leroy, I thought nothing can come close. I would say that this is a magnifice...  more »

  • Small but beautiful. Best views of Menton and surroundings. Access by foot allows to roam through the historical old town.
  • We discovered this place by accident - driving along the Boulevard de Garavan - a dazzling drive, scented by Cedar trees looking down to the aquamarine Mediterranean below but reaching it by car is treacherous. If you have to reverse to allow oncoming traffic to pass - the drop down to the sea is a long way. Very narrow road. But once find your way here - the views are incredable - along the coast to Italy on your left and to Cap Martin on your right. Inside this very ancient Cemetry on a outcrop overlooking the red tiled rooftops below - the final resting places of familys are more like little houses, forever gazing out to sea. When we descended to Menton below and sitting in a cafe next to the sea and told someone where we had been - they gave us a look and said 'most people walk to visit it'.
  • A local cemetery with a view.
  • Even if you are not impressed by the old cemeteries, there is something to climb, because you will go through the old picturesque streets, I offer stunning views of the cemetery district.

  • A magical place that is almost as beautiful as the cemetery of San Miniato in Florence
