  • A quaint village dominated by the CASTLE OF MENTHON. It is here that wants to be born Bernard of Menthon, spiritual hero from an early age. Expected in the Chapel to marry him, he escapes through the window of his room landed gently supported by his guardian angel. He lives as a hermit in the Mont Joux and founded two hospices on the well known passes. But historians have no text. The castle is very old. It's an old house converted, in the tenth century, to the year 923; It was originally a simple guard station wooden, installed on this promontory which dominates the old Roman road and Lake Annecy, revamped several times and restored in the 19th century in a Gothic Revival style. Everything reminds the host of the 10th century, even the chapel of the sixteenth century where he prayed and the slot ogival of the thirteenth century, the cell, the lounge at the many memories of a family illustrates for centuries in the service of the Dukes of Savoy and today showing the letters and the University. The 'Souls' Square Tower dominates the whole feudal most impressive may be the Savoy, at the foot of the haughty Tournette. During the Renaissance the medieval fortress is transformed into a sumptuous residence and seat of the barony of Menthon. The apartments take the place of the paths. This castle has 105 rooms on 4 levels, an amazing library of more than 12 000 books including the incunabula, early printed books and ancient manuscripts written on parchment, skin from sheep or goats, with illuminations painted by the monks of the middle ages. But most of these books are the XVI, XVII and XVIII century. Are also some rare editions of the encyclopedia of Diderot.francois de Menthon, father of the current count, jurist, resistant, represented as a Prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials the France. He worked for the creation of the European Union and was Minister of Justice under De Gaulle. A legend tells us that a certain Walt Disney, of passing through the region, was inspired by the architecture of the castle of Menthon-Saint-Bernard to build his famous Castle of the beautiful sleeping beauty, it would be prudent that you were going to check.

  • It must be indicated on the site periods of closing or opening, because we are broken nose in front of the door. Group individual visit closed September 30 to October 15. The Castle, seen from the Palace de Menthon is very impressive, Castle of fairy tales.

  • A real fairy tale Castle whose discovery plunges the visitor into a dream world to crazy romance, a bit like these well-known Bavaria castles, and more in a unique setting which is so beautiful Lake Annecy. Hung on the mountainside and surrounded by forests, it majestically dominates a vast panorama. And seen up close with its high walls and its slender turrets, it is even more impressive. I just found out only this summer while I pass by this area for years! It is true that there are so many beautiful things to see around the Lake... Given the time we did not have the leisure to visit, but they say it was worth. Already to make the tour is in itself a delight with bonus incredibly beautiful views on the scope of the Annecy Lake on the right and in the background the wide chain of mountains. A moment of holiday which will have marked our memory

  • Worth the trip up there just for the views alone. Unfortunately there is no photography allowed in castle. You also have to take a guided tour. The fee was fair, and there wasn't many people. The drive up there had minimal signage, but the GPS managed to get us there. The castle has various rooms to see that are decorated in traditional linens. It is a functioning castle with a family living there so there are portions of the castle that are not available for viewing. If you are in the area and have a car to drive up to the castle, it'll be well worth it!
  • Absolutely amazing castle and view. This part of France is definitely on the top of the 'Most Beautiful Places In The World' list. Enjoy !
  • Beautiful old castle, but be warned they only open in the afternoons
  • Your was very nice and theatrical, but there was so tour in English.
  • Beware during peak season you may have to arrive early to get tickets: the last tickets are sold way before the last visit
