Chateau De Germolles, Mellecey

4.8
#10 of 26 in Historic Sites in Saone-et-Loire
Castle Tourist Spot
Château de Germolles is situated in Burgundy, not far from Beaune and Chalon-sur-Saône. It is the best preserved residence of the Dukes of Burgundy. Built during the second part of the 14th century, this château is important for the history of the region. Furthermore, it is a rare example of such a well-preserved residence in France in the 14th and the beginning of the 15th centuries, when most of the princely palaces of that period have almost entirely disappeared. This exceptional site evokes court life in France on the eve of the Renaissance. It has been listed as a Historic monument since 1989.

  • If there is a visit to Burgundy, this is this! Honestly, we see no big thing of the Castle, but is it so important? The visit was made by an extra guide, a peerless storyteller who has plunged us in the past and the incredible dynasty of the Dukes of Burgundy. It is not the time spent, 1 h 30, we'd almost like to stay longer and soak up more of the place. It is a must visit, no doubt!

  • Not knowing what to do that a little gray Sunday of July we went visiting Germolles Castle kms from our cottage. What a nice surprise, the visit scheduled for 1:15 lasted 2 hours so our guide (the owner of the Castle) is passionate and exciting. We learn so much about the Hardy Philippe and Marguerite of Flanders, their daily lives, the why of the inscriptions on the tapestries that are vintage, etc.. This is a visit not to be missed and compared to some of the castles is quite reasonable.

  • Absolutely brilliant. The tour guide kindly took three of us around, and did an absolutely incredible job of bringing everything to life - its rich history and architectural intricacy, and all his hands-on experience of its faithful restoration. How much love and attention has been put into all this work shows through at every step of the way. This was one of the highlights of our holiday, and I can't thank and congratulate him enough.
  • I love the site and the guide is really very competent. A great discovery of the life of the Dukes and duchesses of Burgundy!

  • Excellent tour with a guide to the historical and architectural culture without flaw. The visit was a real moment of pleasure and discovery thanks to the talent of the guide. The castle in him even worth to be seen, to some of these aspects that make its originality in Burgundy and France.
