Le Chateau de Roquetaillade, Mazeres

(4.3/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
The Château de Roquetaillade is a castle in Mazères (near Bordeaux), in the French département of Gironde.HistoryCharlemagne, on his way to the Pyrenees with Roland, built the first fortification there. Of this old castle, nothing remains but imposing ruins. In 1306, with the permission of the English King Edward I, Cardinal de la Mothe, nephew of Pope Clement V built a second fortress (le Château Neuf). This new castle was square in plan with six towers and a central keep. The entire structure was restored and transformed by Viollet-le-Duc and one of his pupils, Duthoit, between 1860 and 1870. The extraordinary interior decorations, with its furnishings and paintings, were created by Viollet-le-Duc and are listed as French Heritage. The château park includes remains of the medieval curtain wall with the barbican, the Pesquey stream and its banks, the 19th century chalet, and the Crampet pigeon loft.It has been listed since 1976 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture and is open to the public.TodayThe castle has been lived in by the same family for over 700 years. It has been open to the public since 1956 and is the most visited in the Bordeaux region. Open all year round, visits in English with the owners are also possible.

  • Certe Viollet-Leduc mansion did not only of the beautiful... The castle is on a human scale, on the other hand this day our volunteer guide especially made a visit to the door of children. I l had visited a few years ago with the owner and I had learned a lot, fortunately I have the memory. Beautiful property, in a gorgeous setting! Great testimony to the past

  • This is an amazingly preserved castle. Our tour was both entertaining and very informative. The property is beautiful.  more »
  • The clementin castle that rises in the middle of the Park is in a State of preservation is so remarkable that it is still inhabited and that its historic kitchen is used daily by the owners. You can amaze you on: Court of arrival, entry hall with monumental staircase, dining room with its bridge of access to the gardens, the cardinal room, guests, Synod Hall, kitchen time. The architecture of the building bears the traces of its history since its construction, to the strong modernizations of Violet-Le-Duc you can also visit the medieval castle, the Chapel and the farm. 1-2 hours of visits more time to enjoy the beautiful park landscape. Not to be missed.

  • The Château and surrounding grounds are beautifully maintained and cared for. It was one of the best Château tours we experienced in Southern France. Couldn't take pictures of the interior though.
  • A beautiful castle, a very enjoyable tour with a very decent rate. Too bad that the gift shop is no longer provided, and that there is not an associative structure to fund the restoration of the building.

  • Very nice Castle and very good guided (very funny) however do not take the metairie (not interesting) plus a little high price however for the duration of the visit (1 h) Another disadvantage, it is forbidden to take photos in the Interior of the Castle...
