Sacre Cœur Basilica Marseille, Marseille

4.5
Admire the impressive interior structure and artistic details of Sacre Cœur Basilica Marseille, a 20th-century church that honors the victims of a massive 1720 plague outbreak and also commemorates World War I. Relatively unadorned on the outside, the church is best known for its interior columns, the largest of which came from Corsica. Other highlights include stained-glass windows made in Paris following the design of painter Henri Pinta, a native of Marseilles. Pinta also created the great mosaic adorning the choir vault, while artist Louis Botinelly carved some of the major sculptures inside the church. Be sure to walk around the building to view the stained-glass windows from the outside. • The good mother doesn't have the exclusivity of the love of Marseille for its churches. Everyone likes his parish but sacred heart has a special place in the heart of Marseille. Errigee by Monseigneur de Belsunce who worked a lot in the fight against the plague of 1720, this church is dedicated to the sacred heart of Jesus and recalls in the style of romano-Byzantine architecture of our Lady of the guard and becomes Lady of the Major

  • Go there at the time of the sunset to see the central stained glass shine a thousand lights. Mass attracts all type of population in the district in true communion, rare in a church. Moreover, not always easy to find a seat on Sunday.

  • This is a review for the Basilica in Marseille, France. Lovely basilica. Peaceful and quiet, voluminous and awe-inspiring, this sits on an unassuming corner on Avenue du Prado on one of the main avenues in Marseille. Beautiful story-telling stained glass featuring blues on one level and reds towards the ceiling. Well worth strolling to this site to stop in.
  • On top of the hill with a marvellous view of Paris. Worth a visit. Crazily busy on weekends.
  • It's so beautiful. It was well worth the walk up all those steps. The view is fantastic!
  • Absolutely stunning with great views of Paris! You will get harassed by people trying to sell you things though
  • A wonderful Basillica and an unique view of the city!

Where to stay in Marseille

The Old Port is near the water, seafood restaurants, and the not-to-be-missed museums. Hotels with sea views come with a price tag to match, though. For more affordable accommodations and local character, check out hostels and rental apartments in the Panier district. The Canebière neighborhood is in the heart of the action. For a more nature-oriented locale, a hotel near Garde Hill offers the nearby botanical gardens.
