Next to the Museum of fine arts, in the beautiful Palace Longchamp in full work, is the museum of natural history of Marseille. A floor on 2 is currently available, dust and spiders are comfortable, at least 50% of the lights are out of service. This has the advantage to let many specimens naturalized in poor condition in a welcome darkness and hide the misery of an institution which is obviously not a priority for the city. The Museum is exceeded. The limit of abandonment, this museum is really not worthy of the 3rd city of France while there is so much to do and to tell about the Mediterranean, the local environment, etc. But the magic still operates for children who discover wild animals. That's something. A renovation is needed!

Museum located in the Palais Longchamp tram 2 right at the top of the stairs (the Museum of Fine Arts is on the left). Not bad, nice but small (animals only on the ground floor). Place dark enough (to protect animals?) c is too bad ca lacks a bit of light. A few beautiful pieces. If you have 30 minutes to get to kill and c is included in the CityPass otherwise not essential. The kids liked anyway. There are a few great skeletons of Giraffe and other animals.

A small, but nice and quiet museum. An hour or two is sufficient to look through it all. The entrance is free on the first Sunday of every month. My only negative is that I wish the exhibitions were described in English, and not only in French.

The museum was decent and the stuffed animals were cool. It was quite a small museum however. The lady selling tickets was also extremely rude and unfriendly.

Very disappointing displays and availability of access to additional floors. Think I've been spoilt by the London Natural History Museum.

Very interesting expositions inside of a gorgeous building!

Nice building. The museum was closed at the time that we came there.

Where to stay in Marseille

The Old Port is near the water, seafood restaurants, and the not-to-be-missed museums. Hotels with sea views come with a price tag to match, though. For more affordable accommodations and local character, check out hostels and rental apartments in the Panier district. The Canebière neighborhood is in the heart of the action. For a more nature-oriented locale, a hotel near Garde Hill offers the nearby botanical gardens.
