(4.3/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
The Marseille History Museum is the local historical and archaeological museum of Marseille in France. It was opened in 1983, the first town historical museum in France, to display the major archaeological finds discovered when the site was excavated in 1967 for commercial redevelopment and the construction of the Centre de la Bourse shopping centre. The museum building, which is entered from within the centre, opens onto the "jardin des vestiges", a garden containing the stabilised archaeological remains of classical ramparts, port buildings, a necropolis and so on.The museum presently contains permanent displays exhibiting the history of Marseille up to the 18th century. Highlights include: some of the finds from the site itself, including, most famously, the hull of a ship of the 2nd century ; the prehistory of the region round the later city, the Ligures and the Phocaeans, and the development through the Ancient Greek and Roman periods of the port of Massilia; early Christianity ; medieval potters' workshops and the first French manufactory of faience ; the redevelopment of the city under Louis XIV and the construction of the forts Saint-Jean and Saint-Nicolas

  • Big fan of Museum, but poor student, I went to the Museum the first Sunday of the month = free. Of course, it is not clear on site audio guides are not available that day, disappointed because I am one of those who prefer listening to reading. Too much reading up, after three hours of visit lumbar are felt, not a lot of seat. The permanent exhibition is interesting but to do several times. Good touch and modern adaptation, but videos are continuous, we are required to wait (once again more standing) that they go back to the start and the sound is very weak, nonexistent for some. The temporary "memory to the sea" exhibition is wonderful. I have not been disappointed.

  • Including underwater archaeology buffs (we are volunteers for the DEPARTMENT), we took our passage to Marseille to see 50 years of this Department of the Ministry of Culture. Exciting temporary exhibition, same as the permanent exhibition on the history of Marseille. See if you like the history of our beautiful country.

  • First, arrival by the bridge leading to the Centre Bourse, it overlooks the remains of the old port and one of the towers of the entrance to the city. Inside, we travel, we live on what was Massalia, Gyptis and Protis legend. On the ground floor, many pieces on antiquity: amphorae, bas-reliefs of Greek temples... Remains exceptional Caravelle, boats flat bottom... of the models of the city, from the Greeks to the present day along the tour, allowing to realize its meteoric growth. A wonderful expo on archaeology underwater with good number of moving objects. The tour continues on the floors of the middle ages to the present day...
