#14 of 24 in Museums in Marseille
La Marseillaise is the patriot song of the revolution and the adopted French national anthem. The Memorial of the Marseillaise is a tribute to the past and an inspiration for the future. The museum divides history into three sections – Pre-Revolution, the Revolution and Post-Revolution. In the Pre-Revolution section, you see newspapers and other peripherals that showcase Marseille before the revolution took place, it also shows you the lead up to the revolution. In the next section, you are animatedly introduced to the heroes of the revolution and the struggles they faced. In the last section, you are taken through a very special presentation of birth of the French Republic. This museum is already almost not found in the middle of the Thubaneau Street, well away from the tourist places and in a dark alley. Opening hours make an almost.. Museum. We still planned to take advantage of the European heritage days to finally discover this memorial. We well had taken care to ensure in advance of participation this Museum in these days and the opening of the latter... and despite two attempts, we systematically found door closed, without any words, any explanation... It is to wonder if there is actually a collection to discover beyond the metal flag which adorns the façade.

The memorial is hidden and little known to tourists as of Marseille. Really worth a visit for its stagings. It allows to discover and or rediscover the history of the Marseillaise, to do at least once.

It's for a long time that I went, and it seems that the memorial will move because even Marseille were not going. What a pity! Yet the Museum is very well designed and the district no longer deserves its reputation. Located behind the library of the Alcázar, this area became cleaner and safer (by day). A few nice shops all around. even if it's still the neighborhood of wholesalers.

Where to stay in Marseille

The Old Port is near the water, seafood restaurants, and the not-to-be-missed museums. Hotels with sea views come with a price tag to match, though. For more affordable accommodations and local character, check out hostels and rental apartments in the Panier district. The Canebière neighborhood is in the heart of the action. For a more nature-oriented locale, a hotel near Garde Hill offers the nearby botanical gardens.
