Head to Marseille's Old Port and discover Fort Saint-Jean, one of the city's top historic attractions. The fort dates back to the 17th century, when it was built on the site of a medieval stronghold used by the Knights of St. John. Over the centuries it has housed French Army troops, the Foreign Legion, and German occupying forces during World War II. Severely damaged in 1944, the fort is now largely restored and serves as a time capsule, with displays telling stories from its past and an abundance of nooks and crannies to explore. You'll also be rewarded with amazing views of the city and the port. Entering the fort is free. By using our Marseille vacation builder, you can arrange your visit to Fort Saint-Jean and other attractions in Marseille.

  • Something worth going to see. Don't expect it take up hours of your time. Try and go a day there isn't too much wind, however
  • Gorgeous historical fort to walk around. I didn't enter the museum, but found plenty to see in the beautifully landscaped parks. There's a stunning view of the Marseille port from the top!
  • Part of the museum. Great views
