Fort Saint-Jean, Marseille

4.6
Head to Marseille's Old Port and discover Fort Saint-Jean, one of the city's top historic attractions. The fort dates back to the 17th century, when it was built on the site of a medieval stronghold used by the Knights of St. John. Over the centuries it has housed French Army troops, the Foreign Legion, and German occupying forces during World War II. Severely damaged in 1944, the fort is now largely restored and serves as a time capsule, with displays telling stories from its past and an abundance of nooks and crannies to explore. You'll also be rewarded with amazing views of the city and the port. Entering the fort is free. Using our custom trip planner, Marseille attractions like Fort Saint-Jean can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

With the creation of MUCEM fort St. Jean has been beautifully renovated. It is the ideal place to enjoy Marseille, especially the old port and the harbour.

Great free attraction, one of the highlights of Marseille. You can go up on the walls and see great views of the city, the port, and the sea. There are some exhibits in the fort which hold art galleries and play videos about the history of Marseille in several languages. Easy access to the museum MUCEM by the footbridge.

Something worth going to see. Don't expect it take up hours of your time. Try and go a day there isn't too much wind, however

Gorgeous historical fort to walk around. I didn't enter the museum, but found plenty to see in the beautifully landscaped parks. There's a stunning view of the Marseille port from the top!

Where to stay in Marseille

The Old Port is near the water, seafood restaurants, and the not-to-be-missed museums. Hotels with sea views come with a price tag to match, though. For more affordable accommodations and local character, check out hostels and rental apartments in the Panier district. The Canebière neighborhood is in the heart of the action. For a more nature-oriented locale, a hotel near Garde Hill offers the nearby botanical gardens.
