Chateau d'If, Marseille

3.9
#2 of 16 in Parks in Marseille
An impressive castle, Chateau d'If was the setting for Alexandre Dumas' adventure novel "The Count of Monte Cristo." This three-story building is 28 m (91 ft) high, situated on an island, and bordered by three towers with large gun embrasures. The castle never weathered an actual attack, though, and was eventually transformed into a prison. French Protestants were sent there in the early 19th century. The castle was converted into a public museum in 1890. It can now be reached by boat from Marseille's old port. At the start of the old port for € 16 per person cruise 2 hours to the chateau d'if with stopover visit is a very nice idea for a Sunday or holiday ballad! On the ride to go a very detailed guided the story of major landmarks in the Bay of marseille. The chateau d'if former prison is a building very well preserved and the visit allows us to imagine the living conditions of inmates. An exhibition on Alexandre Dumas and his character Monte Cristo comes to enhance the course. It takes about 1/2 hour visit. There is a charming little bar/snack against marseille where you can pleasantly wait for the shuttle. Very friendly staff. Quick return to marseille. To do!

The small boat to get to the Castle ride is pleasant in itself. The visit to the premises is also touching, with these isolated old stones, these walls loaded history of the prisoners, maintained with care by the Historical Monuments. It's very self-guided, so much the surroundings of the Castle are open and wild. In the Castle, several animations are there to give body to the visit. And since the island, what a beautiful view on the city of Marseille!

Where to stay in Marseille

The Old Port is near the water, seafood restaurants, and the not-to-be-missed museums. Hotels with sea views come with a price tag to match, though. For more affordable accommodations and local character, check out hostels and rental apartments in the Panier district. The Canebière neighborhood is in the heart of the action. For a more nature-oriented locale, a hotel near Garde Hill offers the nearby botanical gardens.
