Chateau d'If, Marseille

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Island
An impressive castle, Chateau d'If was the setting for Alexandre Dumas' adventure novel "The Count of Monte Cristo." This three-story building is 28 m (91 ft) high, situated on an island, and bordered by three towers with large gun embrasures. The castle never weathered an actual attack, though, and was eventually transformed into a prison. French Protestants were sent there in the early 19th century. The castle was converted into a public museum in 1890. It can now be reached by boat from Marseille's old port. • It's in 1516, the King François Ier had the idea to build a fortress on the island of if, during a visit to Marseille. The building then quickly became a prison due to its isolation, thus making the escape of prisoners more complex. There were also the famous prisoner José Custodio Faria, made immortal by Alexandre Dumas, author of the count of Monte Cristo. The site is full of "stories". You can especially see the legendary hole in the wall by Edmond Dantès during his escape. The fortress eventually accommodate the insurgents in 1848 and the communards of 1871. It will lose its prison vocation, before be open to the general public in 1890.

  • Cool, but not amazing. If you like old forts, it's cool. The views of Marseille are great. If you can get the ferry tickets at a good price, it's worth it.
  • Beautiful, but very small. The exhibits inside are pretty good, especially the one about the rhino
  • Great place to visit, however poorly documented, some rooms don't match the leaflet. Overlapping of fact and fiction. Be careful as flooring and paths can be difficult to walk on. Pleasant boat trip.
  • Interesting spot. Worth seeing if you are into Monte Cristo story.
  • Breathtaking view. All around a Great experience. Definetly check it Out while around Marseille!
