(360+ reviews on the web)
Castle
Discover the 17th century apartments of Madame de Maintenon and the lavish rooms of the Sun King Louis XIV at Château de Maintenon. The main architectural features include the 13th-century keep, the bridge across the moat, and the corps de logis flanked by two round towers. Stroll to the far end of the formal French gardens to view the Vauban aqueduct built in 1685 to supply the fountains at the Palace of Versailles. The haphazard and varied heights of the towers, spires, and steeples create an emblematic character reminiscent of an old town or abbey. • Not far from Chartres this beautiful Renaissance Castle is worth a visit, but careful no photo is allowed in the inside of the parts. In the bottom of the garden decorated French you can see ruins of an aqueduct which requires some explanation. King Louis XIV to supply water basins of the Palace of Versailles has decided to take the water of the Eure to channel it into Versailles, take him was from a lock between the Vaux (field of children of Auteuil) Castle and St germain des Vaux locks Boizard with the help and agreement of Vauban there. mobilized 30,000 men 20,000 soldiers and 10,000 civilians (peasants, workers, Stonecutters etc...) this building has begun in 1684 to interrupt forever in 1688, and more of a war, a calculation error on the slope of the ground to reach the basins of the Castle did not validly continue the work, the slope was only 16cm per Km. For people who would be interested for explanations on the castle for €1 50 surcharge on access give you the Council to take a guide, these are highly competent international guides... I wish you enjoy your visit and enjoy your stay in Eure and Loir

  • Not too bad a place to visit. The Chateau is in a good state of repair and the grounds are excellent. It would have got one star more if it was slightly larger or slightly cheaper.
  • Beautiful! Small music in the gardens, superb. Visit!

  • Beautiful French garden. The castle is under renovation. The Interior is a bit disappointing... Some parts are not time, as the walls of staircases that give on the 1st floor... pity...
