Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte, Maincy

Must see · Castle · Historic Site
Constructed entirely on a platform surrounded by a moat, Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte can be reached by one of two bridges. The Baroque architecture and estate plan here marked the beginning of the Louis XIV style, combining architecture, interior design, and landscape design. The garden's pronounced visual axis is an example of this style. Inside, you'll find Monsieur and Madame Nicolas Fouquet's apartments, furnished to depict their 17th-century aristocratic lifestyles and decorated with their favorite artworks. From the ground floor, you can see the garden and countryside. Children's activities, guided tours, and audio tours in English are available at the ticket booth. Just past the booth, you'll find the Horse and Carriage Museum, with large stables and ornate antique carriages. • Location of some scenes from James Bond film Moonraker '79 One has to imagine a time with no radio or TV. What does one do for entertainment? Walk in the Garden, Picninc and camp out in the back...  more »

  • This is a hop, skip and a jump from Paris, and well worth the effort! It is every bit as extraordinary as Versailles without the crowds. I would really plan on spending the whole day at the...  more »
  • One of my favorite castle in France. You have to go to the candle light during summer. It’s a magic atmosphere with the castle lit with thousands of candles outside and inside.
  • Amazing experience to France's second largest owned property! Amazing host and staff superb service and magnificent French dishes. I will definitely revisit this Chateau..
  • I have been to most of the popar chateaus this week and I have to give this one five stars. The self guided tour is comprehensive but not too long. However there is extensive information available if you are super interested. It's absolutely the most organized concise tour route of any I have seen this week. No backtracking, mazes, or confusing signage. This château has a free audio thingy you hold up to your ear.. Super helpful and easy to use. Most chateau's are not easily handicap accessible - except for verseilles. Here they have golf carts available for 25 euro an hour to tour the grounds - I didn't see that available at other chateau's. You have to be quick but you can do the loops and walk to Hercules and get the cart back in an hour.
  • Most manageable of the three chateaux near Paris (Versailles and Fontainebleau being the others). Smallest of the three, but cozy and most intimate. Almost impossible to get to independently, so highly recommend combining this with Fontainebleau for a day tour with a tour operator. It's basically in the middle of nowhere, and there are very few visitors, even in the height of the summer tourist season, so it's a nice escape. If you don't have time, I'd prioritize Versailles or Fontainebleau because they also have more cultural and historical significance.
  • One of the most enjoyable moments of our lives, beautiful property, with a monumental experience at every spot of the ground was able to see and explore all the property using Golf cart, they are available to rent for (20 euros). When available dinner with 2000 candles made the evening more special and romantic price was extremely affordable ( 59 euros). Visiting this chateau is a must. Plenty of parking (free), staff were kind and helpful... did this on our own, just check the chateau de Vaux le Vicomte website, using google maps for directions.... you will love this place... enjoy.
