Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte, Maincy

(4.4/5 based on 3,000+ reviews on the web)
Constructed entirely on a platform surrounded by a moat, Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte can be reached by one of two bridges. The Baroque architecture and estate plan here marked the beginning of the Louis XIV style, combining architecture, interior design, and landscape design. The garden's pronounced visual axis is an example of this style. Inside, you'll find Monsieur and Madame Nicolas Fouquet's apartments, furnished to depict their 17th-century aristocratic lifestyles and decorated with their favorite artworks. From the ground floor, you can see the garden and countryside. Children's activities, guided tours, and audio tours in English are available at the ticket booth. Just past the booth, you'll find the Horse and Carriage Museum, with large stables and ornate antique carriages. • My first visit to France happened this summer and we decided to spend a week in Paris! I was looking up things to do and there was a lot of opinion between going to Versailles or Chateau de Vaux-le-Vi...  more »
  • We have arrived in the station Shuttle, filed with the Castle by a very friendly driver. The view is already beautiful, in the countryside, out of the ticket office, in an annex to the castle made us it happen in a court where St. Nicholas for Christmas, with donkeys! Rather interesting gallery of carriages at the same place, before returning to the Castle. The course is simple but well done, parts filled with fine furniture, paintings and tapestries, paintings and sketches, a real charm with the fires of chimneys in parts! For Christmas, some rooms and salons were decorated with beautiful Christmas trees, lights, animals and accounts for children, with scents of candles and spices in addition to wood fire! The large lounge, and its ceiling imitating sky resembled a large forest of trees where deer, deer and foxes were hidden: beautiful. Pass through kitchens actually us happen to a very interesting exhibition about André ours, before arriving in its gardens, even more beautiful than the Castle. A linear perspective out of sight revealing pieces of landscapes and nature, pools and sculptures entirely reflected by our, the tour can take a whole afternoon! The dome of the chateau visiting, must unfortunately go through the Castle, and there is the cold shower... an overcrowding of school groups and tourists, another room can take 10 minutes... therefore privileged the visit to the castle in the morning and gardens the afternoon. Only negative point, the restaurant. A self excessively expensive and armored world, worthy of a low range Flunch where a tomato and an egg cost you an arm. Nightfall, the Christmas lights in the gardens and on the façade of the Castle, the firs, a giant light deer make the magic place!

  • This is a great Château The audio guide is the best there is! Great ideas! All the other châteaux must learn!
  • Impressive place. Very nice to walk thru its huge gardens. Recommend to do them in the evening so candlelights are on. Very romantic. Its a bit expensive from my point of view.
  • Beautiful by candlelight, the music and performance in the evening were well done and small kids seem to love it. Food at Les Charmilles restaurant was quite good for a set menu, although the lemon parfait was a little tart for our liking.
  • Nice day trip for Paris if you want to avoid the Versailles crowds. Beautiful gardens and nice interior as well.
  • I was there in 1982 and it was amazingly beautiful, well maintained, The gift shop was lovely too. Not to be missed. The gardens are breathtaking and staff very provessional. Spend the day here if you can and walk the gardens. One of my favorite places Go enjoy You will always remember this beautfiul place.
