Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte, Maincy

Constructed entirely on a platform surrounded by a moat, Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte can be reached by one of two bridges. The Baroque architecture and estate plan here marked the beginning of the Louis XIV style, combining architecture, interior design, and landscape design. The garden's pronounced visual axis is an example of this style. Inside, you'll find Monsieur and Madame Nicolas Fouquet's apartments, furnished to depict their 17th-century aristocratic lifestyles and decorated with their favorite artworks. From the ground floor, you can see the garden and countryside. Children's activities, guided tours, and audio tours in English are available at the ticket booth. Just past the booth, you'll find the Horse and Carriage Museum, with large stables and ornate antique carriages. • This castle is really impressive. The inner tour is really exciting. Our journey not there unfortunately not led us at the right time. We have come all the outdoors in the rain and little vegetation. We will return to the good season, and despite ECB boxwood. I reiterate my message to security personnel: the protection of goods and individuals does not exclude the kindness and the smile. I'll send mine in token of my appreciation for your commendable work. A must-see!

  • Visit of the Castle, the garden and the Museum of crew = €16.50 supplement audio guide € 3, discovered the dome €3 supplement we went there the first day of the opening at 10: 00 Saturday 17 March 2018. Little world. Very nice visit which lasted 2 hours, without watching the video in the basement near the kitchens, and have gone to the statue of Hercules at the bottom of the Park. The Interior is beautiful, very well furnished. The guards responded to our questions. Very nice collection of carriages however the garden wasn't ready, a lot of droppings of ducks in the aisles, and no jet of water/waterfalls wasn't working. Too bad. The parterres of boxwood are unfortunately sick, due to a variety of Caterpillar and 2 mushrooms. BEAUTIFUL CASTLE.

  • The approach of Christmas, every year, the Castle turns into Castle magical theme (2017: "La Gourmandise".) Magic atmosphere made of thousands of fairy lights, giant fir trees... Thousand small étioles in the eyes of... children & adults! The castle is considered to be the best Ambassador of Italian style in France. He also draws his references in antiquity. These different sources will allow him to imagine a style that is clean, new & powerful, a style which would become the base of French architecture for the century & a half. Arranged on a long axis of 4km, home arises by an effect of successive plans where the gaze is channeled through the walls of the dependencies that border the forecourt. He suggests, share & more of its façade, gardens that extend beyond marrying the natural slope of the land disciplined in large terraces. Instead of layering, he juxtaposes, giving the building a double thickness. The ovoid dome is one of the major technical & aesthetic prowess. In 1641, Nicolas Fouquet, young member of Parliament for 26 years, acquired the fief of Vaux. 20 years + later, he makes a unique masterpiece. For the 1st time in history, this visionary brings together on the same project the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter-decorator Charles Brown & the André the our gardener. The victim of a conspiracy, he is arrested and sentenced to banishment, and then to prison to life by Louis XIV in 1661. Yet, he was always faithful to the King. The image of the squirrel, emblem of his family & his motto "how far will mount you it not?" It rises up to be appointed Superintendent of Finances in 1653 by Mazarin. There mission is to replenish the coffers of the State in 1653 by Colbert. The death of the cardinal, in 1661, Fouquet logically should succeed him as the 1st Minister, but Louis XIV, 22 years old, decides to remove this function & to take control to govern alone. Colbert, calculator & jealous of the success of Fouquet, took the opportunity to accuse him of having diverted millions (in reality, stolen by Mazarin) to trigger his disgrace. Despite the warnings of his friends, Fouquet suspects nothing of what is happening. 08/17/1661, while it offers the King a sumptuous reception, its fall is imminent. That night, Louis XIV, manipulated by Colbert, has already decided to throw Fouquet in jail. This way, Voltaire will be these words: "on 17 August, at 6 in the evening, Fouquet was the King of France, at 2: 00 in the morning, there was nothing". He is arrested in Nantes, 3 weeks later, by the captain of the Musketeers, d'Artagnan & is brought before a Court of exception. Trial drags but eventually turned to his advantage, the judges voting his banishment, that is to say the freedom out of the Kingdom. But the King intervenes, using his right of pardon, breaks the award judges & decreed prison. Fouquet is sent to the prison of Pignerol where he died on 23/03/1660 of apoplexy. It was suspected to be the iron mask wrongly as a twin of the King, Henri II of Guise, Molière, a lover of the Queen Marie-Thérèse who had a daughter ave a black slave: Nabo, James of the check mark (illegitimate son of Charles II of England) , & others whose Eustache Dauger, Fouquet, which is the generally accepted = domestic. Christmas period: from 25/11 to 07/01: Adult = 18.50 euros children - 6 years old, free. Gardens only: 10,50 euros.

  • There are bigger and more interesting castles in France but doing the candlelit tour of this one made for a fun evening. We ate at Les Charmilles and did their 3-course menu. The presentation of the food was spectacular but the food flavor was just average. Also, I had asked if one of the meals could be prepared gluten-free and they had a hard time with the request. Everywhere else in France was super accommodating. The evening tour and fireworks show was a neat experience.
  • Worth a visit. The whole garden and castle are well maintained. You will feel like back in 19th century. We have been there in winter but it was still astonishing since it looked like winter Wonderland.
  • This is a real gem. The house itself is wonderful but the gardens are amazing. Make sure to allow plenty of time to explore the gardens and grounds as there are lots of hidden treasures. This is a great place to visit as it is not as crowded as some of the more famous and well known chateaus. They do serve a wonderful lunch on the premises which is moderately priced and very delicious. This was one of my favorite places while in France and I would highly recommend a visit.
  • Worth visiting. Rent a golf car for the garden part if you dont have much time.
  • Lovely and well maintained castle. Always fun events happening there
