Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte, Maincy

4.4
#2 of 21 in Sightseeing in Seine-et-Marne
Architectural Building Castle
Constructed entirely on a platform surrounded by a moat, Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte can be reached by one of two bridges. The Baroque architecture and estate plan here marked the beginning of the Louis XIV style, combining architecture, interior design, and landscape design. The garden's pronounced visual axis is an example of this style. Inside, you'll find Monsieur and Madame Nicolas Fouquet's apartments, furnished to depict their 17th-century aristocratic lifestyles and decorated with their favorite artworks. From the ground floor, you can see the garden and countryside. Children's activities, guided tours, and audio tours in English are available at the ticket booth. Just past the booth, you'll find the Horse and Carriage Museum, with large stables and ornate antique carriages. • Beautiful chateau, the illusion of the gardens are quite interesting. It's worth going to the top of the roof (but you have to pay) to admire the view. We spent 2.5 hours here, including visiting the chateau and a walk up to the water mirror.
  • Having visited Vaux several times over the years it is the most wonderful place in the world. Tranquil, romantic and beautiful. Visit on a day that gardens and chateau are candlelit, have a meal and wander the garden in the dusk of evening. I cannot remember such a beautiful place.
  • A day I shall never forget. This place is beyond magical. Don't hesitate to go.
  • Beautiful castle on the outskirts of Paris. Feels like a mini-Versailles. The "illusions" in the garden created by Le Notre are worth the detour
  • The castle is beautifull but in need of restauration, i think that is ongoing. Main rooms are beautifull. Do also visit the Dome, the lantern on top op the chateau. The 'behind the scenes' route is nice and the view amazing, Le Notre's creation in all its glory. Take a moment to check out the roof structure, a thing of beauty.
