The Presqu'ile, Lyon

4.6
#11 of 37 in Sightseeing in Lyon
Neighborhood Tourist Spot
The Presqu'ile epitomizes European luxury shopping. Peruse the boutiques and stop at one of the many cafes that populate “the peninsula”--many are situated in just the right place for people watching. Don’t miss the Rue Mercière, where printers and booksellers gathered in the 15th and 16th centuries to practice their trade. These moneyed avenues weren’t always the home to shopping and coffee sipping. They were once a counterpoint to the church's power in Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon.) Those who didn’t wield power in the Saint Paul quarter, tried their hand here. Where to stay in Lyon

Lyon’s nine districts surround the two major rivers running through the city: the Rhône and the Saône. The most scenic districts are Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) and La Croix Rousse, where the city’s historic sites are located. Lodging in these areas is walking distance to these sites. Near the breathtaking Parc de la Tête, the Tête D’Or district offers a quieter option away from the city center.

  • We stayed in the Hotel Vaubecour and spent the whole 3 days either exploring the Presq'ile or Vieux Lyon. The area between the 2 rivers is full of places to visit and places to eat.  more »
  • I actually enjoyed this part of Lyon better than the so-called "old" Lyon. Lots of nice historical building, a great view on the Fourviere hill, and a large variety of shops. It's not big so you can w...  more »
