Place Bellecour, Lyon
(2.6/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Place Bellecour is the third largest square in France and the largest pedestrian square in Europe. In the center of the square you’ll see the Sun King himself, Louis XIV, mounted on a horse in an extravagant and lavish pose. On the west side of the square is a statue of the Petit Prince and the book's author Antoine de Saint-Exupery. These two representations are reminders of the two opposing forces in French history: aristocracy and egalitarianism. The square itself was a vital symbol used by rulers to represent shifts in power by renaming the square with each new era: from kings, to conquerors, to guillotine, and back again. It is a great stop for panoramic photos and a view of some masterful French architecture. With our world travel planner, Lyon attractions like Place Bellecour can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • A beautiful place, with a small park for children, nice to see, walk around, admire the quiet.

  • A move to Lyon can make saving a visit on this site. Of course this is not a major historical site, no important monument, a large space rather empty. There is always something happening: gathering of students, exhibition,... When you are at the foot of the equestrian statue of Louis XIV you have around you Fourvière with its Basilica and the communications tower, the street Victor Hugo to Perrache, the entrance of the street of the Republic... It is here that the Lyon meet: "under the tail of the horse"!
