Musée Miniature et Cinéma, Lyon

(4.7/5 based on 2,600+ reviews on the web)
See exquisite miniatures and learn about movie special effects at Musée Miniature et Cinéma, housed in a 15th-century architectural masterpiece. Inside the Maison des Avocats (House of Lawyers), you’ll find miniatures carved in minute detail. The museum is the brainchild of Dan Ohlmann, a cabinetmaker with a passion for detail that led to a career as one of the leading miniaturist artists in the world. Over 100 miniatures display hyper-realistic scenes of everyday life, such as a local market, a bedroom, or a salon complete with bookshelves and teacups. Continue to the second floor where you'll see the artists at work. Watch as a miniature takes shape under the steady hand of these resident artists. If you’re hungry for more magic, then don’t miss the film special-effects exhibit displayed in the other half of the historic building; the dynamic displays and reenactments reveal the trickery behind the camera. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Lyon holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Musée Miniature et Cinéma and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Film buff or not, this museum contains some very nice pieces! The rates are very affordable for the quality of the scenography and the works presented. On several floors, we go from surprise to surprise, descriptions of the pieces are always very rewarding. Somewhere, we can see the pieces under renovation / preparation, star wars fans, this gave us want to come back! A treasure in the city not to be missed!

  • The museum is set on 5 floors with the top floor having some fantastic miniatures. The level of detail is amazing. The area is a little cramped and it is hard to get a pram around. There are also inte...  more »
  • We fell completely by chance on this museum. In all seriousness, we're in because the hall was available for free and it was cold! The price is very moderate, we decided to take the chance to visit, although we were not sure about the quality. The first series is disappointing: reconstitution of life-size sets. On the other hand, then, is the explosion! An incredible collection of accessories and original costumes. Teaching spaces on special effects techniques. I won't spoil, but it was super interesting! We spent 2 hours in the Museum, and we'll be back with our children. Special mention for space "my life as a Zucchini". I didn't believe a second entering, but I was struck by the quality of what was presented. Last room: thumbnails... There are some not very good and the génialissime! A detour that is very much worth it!

  • This was a really interesting place - I'd say it would appeal more to people who enjoy their TV/films. It has a mixture of some full movie sets (from the movie Perfume), some rooms with props from a variety of series/films, and some miniatures. Most of the place is air-conditioned so good for keeping cool in the peak sun, and there are toilets on each floor. It's not exactly cheap but if you like what you see in the main entrance, it's worth a look at the rest.
  • This museum was amazing!! The first portion is about movie production, they have full sets, preproduction set pieces, and tons and tons of practical effect pieces! They have comprehensive descriptions of all of the processes involved in production and preproduction. It was very exciting and interesting! The second portion is miniatures which are unbelievable, they are so realistic and beautiful. This is a definite must see when visiting Lyon, it is also in a charming old neighbourhood close to other museums.
  • C'était fantastique! My boys, aged 9 and 10, loved it and were engrossed in the movie sets and miniatures for two hours.
  • Awesome museum, 2 for 1! Real movie props and sets, and beautiful miniatures. The miniatures are true works of art with very evocative scenes/lighting. Also, most of the descriptions are both in English and French.
  • An excellent private museum situated in the Vieux Lyon district detailing the various special effects, decors and costumes used in the movie industry. It also contains a collection of miniature items and sets. 1h30 to 2h tour. Great to do in the case of a greater visit to Vieux Lyon.
