(3.8/5 based on 45 reviews on the web)
La Sucrière is a famous building devoted to contemporary art, situated 48 Quai Rambaud, on the banks of the Saône in the Confluence quarter of the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon.HistoryIt was built in 1930 and was originally used for a factory warehouse in which sugar was stored. It was enlarged in 1960 and finally abandoned in 1990. The building was completely renoved in 2003 by architect William Vassal to turn it into a place for exhibitions of contemporary art. It has thus became the main venue of the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Lyon from 2007. Its 9,000 m² area spread on three floor houses a complex and original architecture. In 2008, an exhibition of flayed bodies caused a controversy about the origin of the corpses. The exhibition attracted 4,000 visitors per week.

  • Beautiful evening in a unique place with a light and a warm atmosphere. Music at the top after dinner with the set of Bob Sinclar.

  • On the occasion of the convention staff organized by my company, 750 employees were gathered for the occasion. The volume of the room is excellent. Small flats on the mezzanines that do not allow people being attables to enjoy the evening. I liked the sleek concrete /metal type factory.

  • Modern venue.
  • Good exhibitions, the place is spacious but a bit noisy.
  • Monumental place dedicated to contemporary art, especially for its biennial, the environment is also worth a visit, as well as the banks of the Saône... The interior spaces are ideally designed for contemporary art. Good idea for "The sugar" on the top floor, pity it is not permanently open day... Great idea to make a living throughout the years of the façade. I came here for the first exhibitions, the surroundings were a huge brownfield... The fact that contemporary Art is there to be "imposed" seems to have inspired architects and planners... We regret the lack of parking spaces for people with disabilities near the entrances.
