Institut Lumière, Lyon

(4.3/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Institut Lumière is an homage to French film-making. The museum honors the work of Auguste and Louis Lumiere, the fathers of film-making and the inventors of the cinematograph. Located in the Lumiere family home, the museum was founded by a Lumiere grandson. One of the earliest motion pictures was shot just outside the home. You’ll see inside the family life of the first film visionaries and learn about their early experiments. The institute works to preserve early French films. It is from their effort that you can still view some of the first film footage ever recorded. To visit Institut Lumière on your trip to Lyon, use our Lyon vacation trip planner.

  • This is a must for any true film buff, but if you are short on time, travelling with children, or less serious about cinema, I'd recommend the Musée Miniature et Cinema instead which has much wider ap...  more »

  • The visit was a bit deceiving as not all floors were open and available for the visit (1 floor over 4). I expected to see more things about the history of cinema but the museum showed only a couple of cameras with few explanations. It's nonetheless an interesting subject and visit. The visit is free with your Lyon Card pass giving you access to all the museums for free as well as illimited transportations in the city. It's a one hour visit.
  • Small but a great museum to visit if you are into cinema and photography.
  • Take the audio guide if you do not understand French. Great collection and replicas of the Lumière inventions from cinema to artificial limbs. Don't miss the early movies displayed on small monitors.
  • Amazing museum! Cinema lovers must visit it. Really interesting...
  • I love this museum, showing two greats of early photography, the Lumiere brothers. This shows not just the brothers but others during that time too. It also explains the science behind early photography.
