  • The Museum of Lugdunum dominates the ancient theatres of the ancient Roman city and offers of outside views of the city and its surrounding area. Upon entry, the temporary exhibition AQUA - the INVENTION Roman presents the city water supply system, already sophisticated Roman. With its four aqueducts, its tanks, its drinking fountains, its spa, and sewerage system, with Rome, Lugdunum was one of the cities the best equipped of the Roman empire. Concerning the aqueduct of the Gier, widely represented in this exhibition, the photo taken in-situ by myself in the commune of Chagnon (Loire) of the underground channel of the classic circumvention of the Dureze Valley aqueduct, at the exit of the so-called cellar "the cure" , shows that the difficulty of maintaining this facility in a wooded hillside, lack of thickness of the ground, could be at the origin of its abandonment in the Gallo for the benefit of the bridge siphon located more downstream, halfway between the towns of Chagnon and St.Petersburg. The art of living in the Roman is also well highlighted in the permanent collections, with the evocation of the great public buildings of Lugdunum, the presentation of richly carved sarcophagi, of epitaphs evoking the presence of rich merchants placed large Lyon families or high characters. Special mention can be attributed to the sculpture of the three matres sitting in a shell-shaped niche, which delivers a touching and artistic Mother-Goddess image, deity of Celtic origin referring to prosperity, venerated to Rome.

  • Really enjoyed the visit to the Gallo-Roman museum. There is a beautiful outdoor ampitheatre. Part of the ruins have been converted to a museum about the Gallo-Roman history of this region. The tiled murals are absolutely gorgeous. When we visited, there was a short-term exhibition on the Roman aqueducts. The museum is very close to the basilica. If you are very unfit or health is an issue then you should catch the bus or cable car up the hill asnit is quite steep. Otherwise, it is a fantastic walk through a rose garden.
  • Amazing to see ruins that have been here for millennia. I was surprised that the ruins weren't more protected and you are able to walk up them and climb on top of them. The view if the city from the top of the site was great. There is also a museum here.
  • Interesting, with some incredible artifacts and view of the ruins as well.
  • Free on first Sunday of the month. Definitely worth a visit. Modern design. Tidy, spacious and a lot of clear information. Not everything has English translation but the fact that some do is good enough. There are two windows looking out to the theatres outside.
  • nice Roman theatre, great place for a stop over on the way to Basilica Fourvière
