  • Lyon - the Festival of lights. What for? In 1643, the city of Lyon venerates the Virgin Mary and is put under his protection. 08/09/1852, the statue of the Holy Virgin should be opened, but due to rising of the Saône, the date is extended to 8/12 day of the Immaculate Conception, the statue should be placed on the chapel of our Lady of Fourvière, but again weather prevent this inauguration. Then Lyon having already waited three months, the sky clearing, spontaneously Lyon light candles in their windows to celebrate this religious holiday. Each 8/12, the Lyon light candles placed in glasses colored on the edge of the windows. Tradition due to its religious origin and modernity of the fact of the lighting and set design using light and video projection on the monuments with highlight the heritage of Lyon. The Festival of lights, is an exceptional and beautiful Festival which lasts four days. Every year, on December 08, Lyon, city illuminated by candles placed on the windows.

  • Festival of lights (Fête des Lumières)-Festival of lights-is being held in the French city of Lyon for several centuries. During this festival city dwellers put candles on the Windows, streets lit thousands of lamps, lanterns and lamps. During the Festival, city dwellers put candles on the window (Photo: Stargazer, Shutterstock) Origins of the holiday date back to the mid-17th century, when the plague was raging in Europe. Lyon city councillors decided to refer to the Virgin Mary, requesting intercession and made a vow and glorify it. In September an epidemic in France ended and before reaching Lyon. City kept the promise made to the Virgin Mary. In honor of our Lady was established of gilded bronze statue. The inhabitants of Lyon was to thank the Virgin Mary just before her sculpture. On the day fixed for holding the municipal holiday (8 December), storm broke out, but the citizens were in such high spirits that after its completion still took to the streets and began to Kindle everywhere the lights in honor of our Lady. Thus began the tradition of illumination.
