Church Tourist Spot
The Église Saint-Georges is a church located on the Place François-Bertras, in the Vieux Lyon quarter, in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon. It is under the direction of the Primatiale parish and was named in honor of Saint George. It is near the Place Benoît-Crépu, between the quarter of the and Saint-Jean quarters.HistoryA church located on this place was built in 550, but was destroyed around 732 during a raid of the Saracens, but was restored in 802 by Leidrade. In the fourteenth century, it remained a parish church, but was used by the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, or Order of Malta, and in 1315, the Commandery was located just next and had several windows and two cylindrical towers overlooking the Saône. Lange's family paid for the repairs of the church which were conducted by the commander Humbert de Beauvoir. In 1793, it became a hay barn and became a national property, in 1892, was restored by the architect Pollet. The current church was rebuilt in 1845 and completed in 1848, after plans by the architect Pierre Bossan who also made plans for the basilica of Fourviere. Abandoned between the late 1970s and 1989, the church was later assigned by Cardinal Albert Decourtray to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter under the Motu proprio Ecclesia Dei, which granted the practice of liturgical books of 1962 in Latin.

  • The church is quite "normal", made by the same man who made the Basilica, and inside it like 90% of churches worldwide. The surroundings (next to the Saone river) is very nice, and you'll come across ...  more »
  • Are you as tourists interested in visiting churches in Lyon, you can not avoid bumping into the name Pierre Bossan (1814-1888), architect of the Basilica of Fourvière but also Église Saint-Polycarpe and Église l'Immaculée-Conception. Bossan was as a youngster on study tour in Persia, and here he met Oriental and Byzantine art and architecture. His inspiration from this culture can be experienced in both Basilique Fourvière and Église l'Immaculée-Conception, but the Église Saint-Georges bears no mark of the Oriental culture, but is in the Gothic Revival style. The Church is on the left bank of the Saone, and from the right bank can be seen over at the Church and be delighted by the beautiful proportions. Bossan was a Masterful architect! Where the Église Saint-Georges is located, was already from 500 century a church, which was linked to a nearby monastery. In 700-century, this first church destroyed, but rebuilt about 800. In 1792, when the Revolution broke out, the Church was closed and its priests expelled. At this time the Church was in very poor condition, and the 30. April 1796 dropped parts of the Tower down. When Pierre Bossan built the Church here in 1844-1845, was it all over again. There are no traces of any previous Church in the neo-Gothic construction. The Church's Tower and choir is situated facing the Saone. The actual entrance to the Church is in the Rue Saint-Georges. Before you walk into the Church, one must stop and watch Charles Dufraines bas-relief over the entrance door of St George has just by adding the Dragon the crucial clash with his Lance. The portal is flanked by Saint Peter and John the Evangelist. The Interior of the Église Saint-Georges is a three-aisled Basilica with slender columns separating the three ships. The large number of Windows in the Church are also helps to give an impression of lightness. It stands on the right bank of the Saone, one can see both the Église Saint-Georges and Basilica of Fourvière and bear in mind that both churches are represented by the brilliant architect Perre Bossan.
