Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere, Lyon

(4.7/5 based on 6,000+ reviews on the web)
Emperor Trajan once tread the ground of the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere, now it's your turn. The basilica rests on top of the site of Trajan’s Roman forum; in fact, the French still refer to the site at Vieux-Forum (Old Forum). It wasn’t only Trajan who recognized the import of this location. Several French historical figures also made pilgrimages to the hill. Today, the basilica built on the site offers you a panoramic view of the city from its north tower. Private funds went to build this impressive structure in 1872 as a grand thank you to the Virgin Mary for saving Lyon from a cholera epidemic in 1823. With the Gothic detail of its edifice, the vaulted arches gracing the nave, and the colored light refracting from the stained glass, it may be one of the world’s grandest thank-you cards. • A great ride up on the funicular railway, fabulous views across the town and the Basilica is beautiful. Highly recommended.  more »
  • The murals tell stories at which they hang long stay. This church, which is also so well restored, is wonderful. Very great the view from the square in front of the Basilica.

  • If you go through the old Lyon, knock the rise of Fourvière to visit this Basilica. It's worth the trip. I discovered it a little by chance, friends coming to Lyon. The inside is really beautiful, but the most surprising is the fact that it consists of 2 separate floors. Visited in August 2016.

  • Where: La Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière - Lyon, France What: A Basilica How was it: It was great. Most of the people that were there were all about the lookout. There is a nice view of the city. The church has really nice details and sculptures. Grade: Eli = 4, Serge = 4 Recommend: Yes
  • If you're fond of architecture and fine arts, you'll love it. You'll be breathtaken by the beauty of this cathedral. The view on Lyon at nightfall is also amazing. 2 options for visiting, mornings where you can go there by a small train and go back down to Lyon by following the path. Or at nightfall/evening if you want to enjoy the views of Lyon at night. Not to be missed
  • Beautiful church on top of the small mountain overlooking Lyon. There is no charge to enter. You can pretty much explore the main basilica as well as the one directly underneath. Beautiful view of Lyon. Note that it's a workout to get to the top of the mountain via the stairs route.
  • the view was nice from the church.. the church itself isnt so special, but the atmosphere at the top is nice :)
  • Beautiful building inside and outside as well. Great view of the city, its worth to climb up the hill!
