Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere, Lyon

Emperor Trajan once tread the ground of the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere, now it's your turn. The basilica rests on top of the site of Trajan’s Roman forum; in fact, the French still refer to the site at Vieux-Forum (Old Forum). It wasn’t only Trajan who recognized the import of this location. Several French historical figures also made pilgrimages to the hill. Today, the basilica built on the site offers you a panoramic view of the city from its north tower. Private funds went to build this impressive structure in 1872 as a grand thank you to the Virgin Mary for saving Lyon from a cholera epidemic in 1823. With the Gothic detail of its edifice, the vaulted arches gracing the nave, and the colored light refracting from the stained glass, it may be one of the world’s grandest thank-you cards. A truly magnificent Basilica. The view is breathtaking. The inside is very beautiful with magnificent mosaics. The unusual tour of the Basilica is great.

In this trip I decided to stay without a car and get around the whole city on foot! If you want excitement, come in the Metro and get yourself up to the Basilica. The most interesting part is the ascent by cable car from the subway to the top. In the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin is an incredible atmosphere. You can, if you're lucky, get to the real service, listen, as Catholics hold their services and sing, it's incredibly beautiful. Next, it is necessary to bypass the Cathedral to the left, how come out of it (I mean the part where there is a restaurant and Museum), there is not so crowded and great views. On the other hand there is a plaque with a figured Lyon, where you can see a merger between two Rhône and Saône rivers, where the whole Lyon. Here, at the Cathedral of reality sensation disappears, captures the spirit and you're a little otstranjaeshsja of all that is happening. Definitely worth a visit.

Whether inside or outside of this Basilica you'll be amazed. Accessible either on foot or by cable car, this Basilica is ideally located. You can then enjoy the panoramic view on all Lyon. I highly recommend it. Do not miss.

One of the top destination for must visit in Lyon. The panoramic view of the city is spectacular. Don't forget to take your binoculars with you. The church is big and beautiful. The funicular is great when you don't want to climb up and is included in the public transport, so if you have a day pass for the Metro, you can use the same one to access the funicular.

One word: impressive. The upper deck and lower deck of the church is really breathtaking. The amount of detail of the architecture is jaw dropping. Don't miss the 7 capital sins depictions in the lower chamber!

This is THE place to visit if you have only 1 hour in Lyon! The architecture is amazing, let alone the beautiful interior. The Maria at the eastern top is shinning, the view of the city is breathtaking. What else? You may also want to take a look at the Notre Dame from Place Bellecour!

Really impressive. Not as old as one would think. The mosaic work on the walls is stunning.

Even if you are already tired of visiting churches... here you have one of the best views of Lyon. Sometimes you can even get to see the Mont Blanc. The church itself is not that amazing, however sometimes they organise visits to the rooftop which are quite neat.

Where to stay in Lyon

Lyon’s nine districts surround the two major rivers running through the city: the Rhône and the Saône. The most scenic districts are Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) and La Croix Rousse, where the city’s historic sites are located. Lodging in these areas is walking distance to these sites. Near the breathtaking Parc de la Tête, the Tête D’Or district offers a quieter option away from the city center.
