In the twelfth, at the crossroads of 3 provinces: Anjou, Poitou and Touraine, the spur where stands the fortress is a strategic site occupied since antiquity. A castle is built in the 10th. This is Henri II Plantagenêt, King of England & County of Anjou, which will give the fortress, from 1154, its current shape by including a Palace build nine out of fort St George. In 1205, after a long siege, Philippe Auguste goes master of it & is build several towers. In 1308, the site is important in the history of the order of the Temple. The grand master Jacques de Molay & some dignitaries there are incarcerated (we can see drawings & graffiti in the Tower of the Coudray), before being judged & burned in Paris. In the heart of the 100 years war, the legitimacy of Charles VII as King of France is disputed. It is in this context that the meeting between Jeanne d'Arc & place in 1429 the Dauphin Charles. In fact, he had 2 interviews in Chinon. The 1st takes place 25/02/1429, 2 days after the arrival of Jeanne. It is carried out in the apartments of the Dauphin who receives it in a small Committee. It is housed in the Dungeon of the Coudray. Charles sent him to Poitiers so that theologians can judge his good faith. On his return, Jeanne is again received by the latter. This so-called hearing "of the sign" or "Recognition", becomes official attributed often to the 1st interview. Thanks to the divine election of Jeanne (real or made from scratch), the prince manages to gather his supporters behind his standard so that they regain confidence. Before arriving at Chinon, Jeanne made a stop in St Catherine of Fierbois & write a letter to the "Gentil Dauphin" announcing his arrival "I sent letters to the King to know if I would go into the city where he was. I told him that I had made 150 miles to come to him. It seems to me that there was in those letters that I could recognize it among all other". The legend or the truth about the fact that the Dauphin tried to hide in the middle of his court could have come from there. But especially if she was so sure of it, it is very likely she knew how it was. St. Catherine is not law of Chinon, has you she saw in portrait on a coin or had sufficient descriptions? Then, during her interview with him, Jeanne is already in the city for a few days & it is not impossible, see very likely that she saw the face of Charles, either in drawing, painting, medallion, statue or a description of one of the inhabitants. Maybe even came out with his Court of his Castle! A +, the small room, the Committee restricted around him (with not only men) & that it was probably not look-alike on hand or someone like him a lot easier task. Then devoid of strategic & abandoned role in favour of castles + modern, the fortress falls gradually in ruins. The intervention of Prosper in the nineteenth Mérimée will mark the beginning of its restoration.

  • Magical visit with the various speeches audio triggerable with Tour booklet. The guides are nice and know their subject and the premises are restored with respect for the materials. A true back to the middle age

  • Excellent. Dog friendly. English spoken. Great views of the town below
  • Visited during Euro 2016 - a fantastic castle to visit with the intertwining of English and French history. The views are fantastic.
  • The views are amazing and the staff were incredibly friendly. We showed up without much time before they closed and they still permitted us and gave us a chance to see a few things that were about to close. You can go up to the very top of the towers and to the edge of many of the ramparts. It was a great visit and, if you speak French, there were a lot of fun kid-friendly installments. Great boutique and very clean layout. 10/10 would recommend.
  • We spent a wonderful 4hrs in this place. 8€50 to get in including a tour - ours was in English and only had 4 Brits on it so it was like a personal tour. The guide (Isobel) was brill, informative, enthusiastic - she knew her stuff but made it good fun too. Lots to see, you can get involved in the practical firing of the trebuchon mock-ups or laze away under a shady tree in one of the many deck-chairs dotted around. The cafe serves a good selection of snack-type foods and was reasonably priced. Great way to spend a day!
