The only medieval fortress located in the Loire Valley, Forteresse royale de Chinon is a strategic site where you can explore several restored forts within the castle walls. Built in the 10th century, several 21st century restorations let you immerse yourself in the military and civil history of the fortress with 3-D models, interactive displays, and 150 m (492 ft) of restored ramparts.

Guided tours in English are available for an additional charge, but general admission includes a complimentary informational brochure with a map in English. Maps guide you through the interior complete with two rooms devoted to 16th to 20th century artistic works honoring Joan of Arc.

Two lower rooms present illustrations and archaeological finds from the site's excavations. Come to admire the restored royal quarters, including a 15th-century house, then be struck by the bird-eye view from the top of the castle overlooking Vienne Valley. • A course of the history of France offered with knowledge and humor where we talk about what founded our country and its myths. A great place for a day to Chinon with friends!

  • Stunning location, great for learning about the history of France and England. Really enjoyed the whole ambiance of Chinon - particularly the lift from the riverside town to the Forteresse!
  • Impeccable home. Tour d a very interesting hour informative and entertaining. After visiting only but many film and interactivity with a booklet. A great time. Beautiful landscapes in height of the towers. We can relax on-site and out to a restaurant and come back. Count at least 3 hours to do everything seriously

  • Brilliant. The guide books and interactive boards together with the videos in the Royal rooms really bring the history of this Castle to life, from Henry II to Richard the Lionheart and King John through to Joan of Arc. The deck chairs on the lawns, mean you can enjoy the sun, recharge your batteries before looking at the next bit. The tea rooms have lots of outdoor space and are very reasonable.
  • A Disgrace. My wife, who was born nearby, and I have been visiting the Chateau de Chinon since 1967. In December, 2014, I went to the chateau with our daughters and three friends, expecting great things after the massive renovation of the chateau. Instead we found bare rooms, with occasional media screens and short films so pathetic that we laughed at them. Those who go searching for the magic of Henry II or Joan of Arc will come away completely disappointed. We asked ourselves, are those responsible ignorant or lazy? This is a disgraceful presentation of a great French historical monument. My wife and I are both French citizens and we know our country can do better than this.
  • Beautifull historic site, some games for the kids. Clean restrooms.
  • Nice castle but not the best in the Loire valley
  • Over restored with very few articles or history of interest. Particularly poor when compared to the chateaux in the region, though this is a castle/fortress with a longer history, very little of this is apparent from the exhibits.
