Cathedrale Saint-Pierre de Lisieux, Lisieux

#2 of 12 in Things to do in Lisieux
Cathedrale Saint-Pierre de Lisieux is a rare monument which survived the 1944 allied bombardment. Even though the cathedral has been around since the 6th century, the church we see today must have been constructed between 1160 and 1230 by Bishop Arnoul.

From the outset, the architect designed quadripartite rib vaults and flying buttresses, making it one of Normandy’s first gothic buildings. The nave is fairly austere and is inspired by the Gothic style of the Île de France whereas the most recent parts of the building were constructed in the 18th century (the chevet, the lantern tower and the western façade) in Norman style.

It is wrongly claimed that Henry, the Count of Anjou, the Duke of Normandy and the future king of England married Eleanor of Aquitaine at the cathedral in 1152. Having been involved in the trial of Joan of Arc, Pierre Cauchon was in fact named as Bishop of Lisieux in 1432 and is buried there. • It's a beautiful Cathedral which internally is rather well-preserved. She has nice windows and it is beautifully decorated and flowery. However outwardly it is misery. The stones are very damaged and it deserves a restoration.

  • Most underrated pilgrimage site in Lisieux. Parish frequented by the Martin family. Chapel where Saint Therese attended daily mass and where she received her little revelation and desire to gather the blood dripping from the base of the crucifix as sign of love to give to others. The high altar was donated entirely by her father, Saint Louis Martin, who was quoted as stating that he had given his daughters to the Church and now, lacking a son, he at least was able to give an altar. He was also quoted as responding to a priest who said, "now we have the altar, a priest, all we lack is the victim (speaking about the Eucharist)" and Saint Louis Martin said, I am that victim. This was just three months before his health began to severely decline.
  • That this beautiful Cathedral attracts me by its Majesty! I feel so small... so humble in front of all my brothers and sisters who have worked and still work for the love of God... PEACE to their souls!

  • Beautiful Cathedral from outside, when you go up the road to get there, it's beautiful! Inside, the frescoes are very pretty. I recommend, is a pretty sight in Lisieux moment, this is even the place to see first, if you visit the city!

  • A great building currently accessible to all starting at 10:30 for the summer, a superb place to visit where you can find small quiet places for this restore during the ride in not making the turn with an entrance on Park of the bishopric. Access designed for people with reduced mobility of the place for parking through the small street that is at the intersection of rue Henri Chéron and Victor Hugo.
