  • If you're in the area specifically for prehistory, the museum is a must. Exhibits are new, and staff are friendly. Highlighted here are layers of history and finds in surrounding sites and beyond. We ...  more »
  • On December 31, without notice, the Museum closed at 16:30. When asked, staff retorted that visitors are warned there is a sign in the entrance. As for the silence of the website on this Cavalier decision to people sometimes come from far away, the answer is abrupt. "internet is not our business"... We're looking at a Museum of prehistory... From 4 pm, guards advance a disturbing step from the bottom of the semi-obscures rooms to drive back us to the exit. The scene evokes perhaps the confrontation of our ancestors with bear caves. Magnificent achievement anyway, despite some criticism:-the lighting is too parsimonious. Simple stones are lit up like the butterflies of the Grand Gallery of Evolution. Some records are unreadable without a good flashlight. Saint-Germain en Laye and the Museum renovated man managed to avoid this fault, spoiling some sections. -It's a museum where our Prehistorians are pleases to themselves often forgetting the public. It is better to be Bac + 5 and poured into the arid aspects of prehistoric studies. Some windows are therefore educated by visitors. Few reenactments or models. Low concern for extension despite surprises like the excellent videos or the adornment of shells. For children, the interest of the visit does not of itself. Positive experience overall. I hope that staff could prepare new year's Eve in time. Happy new year to all Michel Jolivet

  • The commune of the Eyzies de Tayac is located at the confluence of the Vézère and the Beune. Located in a contemporary building at the foot of the old Castle of Tayac, the Museum offers to follow the evolution of man and his tools of many Flint cut since the Paleolithic former up to evoke the first phases of protohistory. The site has been inhabited since the Paleolithic, of numerous caves and shelters, including the shelter of Cro-Magnon,

  • Not very English friendly. Loads of info. Free under 25
  • A good place to start your tour of the region. The Musée national de Préhistoire will help bring the time line of habitation, development and use of tools and of course the artwork into perspective.... you won't get this at the different sites. Downside is two-fold: Translations for non-fluent French speakers are incomplete and lousy and the collection seems at times more a depot. Kids under 23 (!) are free and entrance for adults is acceptable at 8euro so take the time and appreciate the upsides.
  • Must see - from the museum you can walk underneath the pre-historic caves and the medieval village. The whole village of Les Eyzies is astounding.
  • Very interesting, too bad we had only 2 hrs.
  • A huge collection of prehistoric objects on multiple levels. Presentations are nice and knowledgeable. The Museum is well organized. A playful and learning area is intended for children. The whole day is not sufficient to see all the objects one by one. The upper part of the Museum allows access to the corniche hence one has a beautiful view of the Vézère Valley. Practical info: free the first Sunday of the month. Photos without flash allowed.
