4.7/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web
Les Combarelles, a series of caves formerly inhabited by Cro-Magnon people approximately 13,000-11,000 years ago, holds more than 600 prehistoric engravings of animals and symbols. Around the turn of last century, the galleries in the caves played a crucial role in the re-evaluation of the mental and technical capabilities of prehistoric humans. Formed by an underground river, the cave extends approximately 300 m (980 ft) long with an average width of 1 m (3.3 ft). It's open to the public, but the site only allows six people in at a time. • Probably the most beautiful note stay, the site visit receives small groups (we were 6) which allows a privileged access to the works. The guide was passionate and exciting and very soon the eye discovers the prints left by our ancestors. Not only the engravings are artistically beautiful but it is also very moving to admire works that have been performed for thousands of years ago. We emerge marveling, admiring and certainly a little more modest.

  • You immerse yourself in the footsteps of our distant ancestors. You're going to go through a long and narrow hose dug by an underground river. To increase its accessibility to the visitor, it's in the XX century it was deepened. Adults must, however, often lean to not touch the fragile walls. The claustrophobic refrain also from the visit. Visit to do only if you have a real sensitivity on the parietal art even without being an expert or a connoisseur. You are seized by the captivating emotion from this cave. If not go your way, this isn't a copy with shimmering colors. This work was performed, more than 10,000 years ago in difficult conditions. License life of the cave has made disappear only paintings remain traces, but the engravings are beautiful (lioness, bears, horses, donkey, Buffalo, reindeer, female figures stylized...). The guides will be sensitive to your interest in the cave and the engravings. They will reveal more than the basic visit. In conclusion, a definite must if you have sensitivity and understanding necessary but lovers of Disney Land must pass their way. This isn't an attraction but your steps arise in those of your ancestors!
