Grotte de Font de Gaume, Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil

4.6
#2 of 14 in Nature in Dordogne
Cave Nature / Park
Grotte de Font de Gaume features some of the best examples of France's prehistoric cave paintings outside Lascaux, which is now closed to the public. Discovered by Denis Peyrony in 1901, the paintings date from 17,000 BCE. At least 230 polychrome (colored) figures have been found here. Most depict animals, including 80 bison, 40 horses, and 20 mammoths. The most famous is a frieze of five bison, accidently discovered during a cleaning in 1966. • A must for lovers of prehistoric painted caves. No copy (such as Lascaux), but ' the original stuff ''. You will be speechless, to know that you have the same abseiling as our ancestors of 18,000 years ago. You see what they have made on the rock wall. ... The only place in the world can you original, polychrome painted caves, this place has something magical. Tip: definitely 2 hours before the opening time for tickets, in view of the influx and the limited number of allowed daily visitors (for the preservation of the site). Either: for more than half a year in advance (limited number of) order tickets via the internet. At the counter: tickets on sale for the engraved caves of Les Combarelles, 500 m away, another highlight of prehistoric art!

  • Amazing cave art! A little tricky to get tickets (especially during peak season) but nonetheless unforgettable experience. Also amazing and knowledgeable guide :) This is one of the biggest masterpieces of the human race and shouldn't be missed.
  • What a wonderful experience to see cave art from 15,000 years ago. Excellent guide, very knowledgeable. We went today and were there by 8:45am and were lucky to be part if the first group to enter at 9am and it was in English! Only 52 people per day can enter the caves. We were the 22 & 23rd in line so get there early!!!
  • The Font-de-Gaume cave is well worth the effort. We went on Sunday, 2 October arriving around 8:00 and were 11th and 12th in line (there are 12 people per tour). Between our arrival and the opening at 9:30 only a handful of people came. As mentioned by other reviewers, when you arrive there is numbered seating to help with organisation, however it is not covered so you’re quite exposed in poor weather – be prepared! We were lucky to be on the first tour at 10:00 which was delivered in English. Our guide was very good and clearly passionate about the site. She showed us all the paintings, which are open to the public, and provided some significance and in some cases interpretation. We had previously gone to Lascaux II which was very helpful in appreciating the Font de Gaume images. We later went to Rouffinac which was again useful for context setting. If this interests you I would recommend all three caves as they are all very different with complementary information. Since it is one of the last of its kind open to the public, and may someday close as well, Font-de-Gaume is a really special experience. My only caveat would be that you do need a bit of imagination to appreciate the significance of the images and some research on the age of the paintings, and the painters themselves, before going is helpful (again this is where Lascaux II is a useful intro).
  • Beautiful very well-preserved cave. Private by an excellent tour guide... We're in a small group in order to preserve the place of carbon dioxide... The ornamentations are still visible and it is with emotion that we are back in the history of our ancestors...
