Grotte de Font de Gaume, Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil

4.4
#1 of 6 in Parks in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil
Grotte de Font de Gaume features some of the best examples of France's prehistoric cave paintings outside Lascaux, which is now closed to the public. Discovered by Denis Peyrony in 1901, the paintings date from 17,000 BCE. At least 230 polychrome (colored) figures have been found here. Most depict animals, including 80 bison, 40 horses, and 20 mammoths. The most famous is a frieze of five bison, accidently discovered during a cleaning in 1966. • One of the last painted caves accessible to the visit. A guide passione, a multitude of paintings and engravings made ago 25,000 years... the place is fascinating. It makes want to visit other nearby prehistoric sites.

  • Vacationing in Bergerac, the cave located on the road to Sarlat is well worth the stop. Free for us (under 25), the visit proved to be interesting and rewarding. The guide was able to adapt to the small group of visitors that we were and was teacher and available. We recommend!

  • Absolutely worthwhile to see the orignal cave art, stunning engraved paintings from so long ago.
  • One of the few places that can see original cave art from 16000 years ago. Absolutely amazing experience. Almost impossible to get tickets. Either book three months (minimum) in advance or wait half a hour before they open and hope to get one of 80 tickets for that day. Definitely worth the hassle of getting a ticket. This place is about 100x grater than Lascaux.
  • Amazing cave art! A little tricky to get tickets (especially during peak season) but nonetheless unforgettable experience. Also amazing and knowledgeable guide :) This is one of the biggest masterpieces of the human race and shouldn't be missed.
  • An amazing experience! The only polychromatic prehistoric paintings in Europe that you can actually see (and not as a reproduction). It was beautiful, and the guide was passionate, much fun and knowleadgeable. Access to the caves is very limited, nearly exclusive: only 80 people per day can access, of which 26 lucky ones manage to book online (VERY early in the year) and 54 are "walk ins". The system is easy: first to arrive get in, an the queueing method is that as you arrive you sit on the numbered seats (not covered, by the way). The time assigned for the visit doesn't seem to be a choice but depends on availability and if several caves are visited or just the one. If you are lucky/in low season you should be fine with arriving at 08.30, but in high season add at least an hour to make sure you enter! At the same counter you can also buy tickets for Les Combarelles (10€, same as Font de Gaume) and the Abri du Cap Blanc (8€).
  • What a wonderful experience to see cave art from 15,000 years ago. Excellent guide, very knowledgeable. We went today and were there by 8:45am and were lucky to be part if the first group to enter at 9am and it was in English! Only 52 people per day can enter the caves. We were the 22 & 23rd in line so get there early!!!
