Grotte de Font de Gaume features some of the best examples of France's prehistoric cave paintings outside Lascaux, which is now closed to the public. Discovered by Denis Peyrony in 1901, the paintings date from 17,000 BCE. At least 230 polychrome (colored) figures have been found here. Most depict animals, including 80 bison, 40 horses, and 20 mammoths. The most famous is a frieze of five bison, accidently discovered during a cleaning in 1966.
