Abbey of Thoronet, Le Thoronet

4.3
Made entirely of stone blocks--cut and assembled by hand, without the use of cement or mortar--Abbey of Thoronet lies in forested hills between Draguignan and Brignoles. The abbey buildings, church, and cloisters were built from 1160 to 1190 and reflect the Ancient style of architecture. The compound also includes an adjoining chapter house, dormitory, storeroom, and cloisters. Wander the site at your leisure, or ask about a guided tour. • A friendly, exciting and cultured, guide who in addition to make you appreciate the magnificence of the sound of the cloisters singing a Gregorian chant.

  • We had the chance to visit this beautiful Cistercian Abbey with Karine, an exceptional guide. More than a tour, Karine made us a real historical conference on the life of the Cistercian monks, their rituals, the cathedral builders, and their measuring instruments, the number of gold, and on the decryption of the symbols present in the building . We feasted, thanks again to Karine, for all these exciting explanations on this place full of history. Did you vibrated in us the spirit of the Cistercian monks. At the end of visit, the icing on the cake, we are fortunate to have a demonstration of acoustic l of the building thanks to the presence of the entire vocal vars musica, who was present for a rehearsal.

  • Nice but without a guide, nobody did us share this possibility, we would we also liked hear the acoustics of this church. So we made the visit with the little leaflet. Explanatory signs at the entrance of the buildings would be welcome. Big parking lot, with the possibility to eat

  • Nice, I prefer Barnard castle. 👑
  • With a fair price of €7.50 (free for Europeans under 26), you get access to the whole abbaye and you can fallow a guide with no additional fee. Our guide was an encyclopedia that knew the entire story of the abbey with passion. Entering the church, she will explain the incredible acoustic and will demonstrate it with a religious song that she will sing with talent. It is essential to follow a guide to understand everything about this place. It is wonderful, well preserved and managed with passion and respect.
  • Very beautiful abbey with quiet surroundings try to avoid the rush by delaying your visit to late afternoon .
  • Not informative or interesting. The interior is plain, unfurnished and boring. The outside gardens were mostly dead and uncared for. It's a waste of time and money.
  • The beauty of this monastery is as powerful as its history. As one turns to view the building, the round openings echo in the mind. Many years ago, I visited with a group of singers from the Yale Institute of Music; as we entered a German group was about to depart and one singer stayed behind. Standing under the entrance, she began to slowly sing Silent Night in German. She paused between each phrase and waited for each phrase to fall down to harmonize with the next one. I don't know if there is another building which has this spine-tingling effect but I'm happy that I experienced this one. If ever there was a five star building this is it.
