#2 of 23 in Historic Sites in Var
Made entirely of stone blocks--cut and assembled by hand, without the use of cement or mortar--Abbey of Thoronet lies in forested hills between Draguignan and Brignoles. The abbey buildings, church, and cloisters were built from 1160 to 1190 and reflect the Ancient style of architecture. The compound also includes an adjoining chapter house, dormitory, storeroom, and cloisters. Wander the site at your leisure, or ask about a guided tour. Beautiful Abbey. There occasionally take his time, and outside the box. Upon the entry into the Church, the magic happens. For uninterested minds, there are several interesting vineyards that might convince a trip with your family. The visit of the Abbey is easy. However explanatory plaques, and the sister of Silvacane abbey, would facilitate the visit.

What intense happiness than this visit! We arrived around 10:15... we were almost alone and in a light breath... especially in the main body of the Church! Our grandsons loved! What unforgettable tour!

Although small, this Abbey Cistercian hidden in the woods of Provence exudes beauty and fullness. The ship, simple and sober, puzzled visitors. The office staff is very close and helps at all.

With a fair price of €7.50 (free for Europeans under 26), you get access to the whole abbaye and you can fallow a guide with no additional fee. Our guide was an encyclopedia that knew the entire story of the abbey with passion. Entering the church, she will explain the incredible acoustic and will demonstrate it with a religious song that she will sing with talent. It is essential to follow a guide to understand everything about this place. It is wonderful, well preserved and managed with passion and respect.

Very beautiful abbey with quiet surroundings try to avoid the rush by delaying your visit to late afternoon .

Not informative or interesting. The interior is plain, unfurnished and boring. The outside gardens were mostly dead and uncared for. It's a waste of time and money.

Wouldn't stay all day but certainly worth a look. Kids find it possibly a little boring though!

The beauty of this monastery is as powerful as its history. As one turns to view the building, the round openings echo in the mind. Many years ago, I visited with a group of singers from the Yale Institute of Music; as we entered a German group was about to depart and one singer stayed behind. Standing under the entrance, she began to slowly sing Silent Night in German. She paused between each phrase and waited for each phrase to fall down to harmonize with the next one. I don't know if there is another building which has this spine-tingling effect but I'm happy that I experienced this one. If ever there was a five star building this is it.
