Chateau de Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas' House, Le Port-Marly

(4.2/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
Built in 1846 by the architect Hippolyte Durand, Chateau de Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas' House is the country house of the writer Alexandre Dumas, père. Dumas named the chateau after one of his most successful novels: The Count of Monte Cristo. During your visit, you can see sculptures on either side of the building, and unique items decorate the interior. The writer had portraits of historic playwrights placed above each ground floor window, but pride of place goes to Dumas himself, who still greets you from above the entrance. Durand’s writing studio is also on the grounds.

The entire property is operated as a public historic museum memorializing Dumas, père. See Chateau de Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas' House and all Le Port-Marly has to offer by arranging your trip with our Le Port-Marly itinerary planner.

  • For fans of Dumas or not! The 2 buildings are beautiful, just a pity that there was not more to see inside but garden and superb architecture... cela takes 1 to 2 hours to go all around. References all of his works, which makes the visit even more fun

  • In Port Marly, the field purchased by Alexandre Dumas moved according to his wishes. In the Park, you first discover the small "chateau d'if" where the author had installed his office; you will only see inside of the ground - floor through a large window. Further, the "Castle of Monte Christo", bourgeois mansion of 3 floors, where many testimonies from the time of the writer are exposed: paintings, engravings, bust, furniture, period clothing... The set is very pleasantly presented; decoration respects the wishes of Alexandre Dumas, including the very beautiful and surprising "Moorish salon". It's too bad that the author, ruined, had lived there only a few years barely... Allow 1 hour to quietly visit overall. Note that this place is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

  • Discovery so far of places full of charm. The Park is beautiful with its castle of If, his way of the waterfalls, the basin to the dragon. The castle is worth the visit. The only damage is that it doesn't is not commented out by either an audio guide or by the person who is present in this place. The castle of If was built to serve as a place of writing for A D.

  • Lovely place, but a bit expensive for what it is
  • Beautiful little castle to human size, only remains that owned Alexandre Dumas. The guided tour is exciting, however there is no time to look at the exposed elements: there is so much to say and too little time to do it. However you can walk alone in the Park, a playground for the imagination: the passages under the stones, the chateau d'if, the garden...
